Haley and Casey - CityWalkLA - August 10th

I'm going to say it, that scat she does in the CityWalk "My Cake" is, IMO, one of her all time best. Right up there with her Scat on Monain' on AI.

I really love it's vibe and execution, from "Dee De de Bop de Bop Bop" to the "Bom di Bom di Bom di" and there are parts I swear she's her won echo .....

Did I mention how much I love that she did new songs in this set? WYDK, My Cake, IITS, TMSG . OM, Free, BATJ, HTGR and WT are nice performance, but I love the infusion of new songs, and all the Caley songs were previously unperformed by them, too.

Tusk - I love that scat too - but I'd say Moanin on AI is my 2nd favorite scat now, in line behind the Cosmo Moanin she did (that you recorded) last December. THAT one I have on my iPod and play every day - I scat along with it all the time in my non-scatty voice.

That scat from Moanin last December is also my absolute favorite. I think, partly, because I think it's one of her longest. I never tire of hearing it. The new scat in "My Cake", an ORIGINAL song, was amazing and hopefully a trend that continues.

I think it will take courage for Haley to record that version, but we can hope. If not now, then at some point in the future when she is hugely famous

A small skirmish over at IDF about Haley still being connected to the AI brand, to stay loyal or to separate.

I thought this was a detail that might be telling in that regard.... or not.

When she was introduced for CityWalk she was introduced as ...

...we have a very, very, VERY talented young lady, singer, songwriter, ladies and gentlemen, big CityWalk welcome to.....Haley Reinhart!!

Not one mention of Amierican Idol.

BTW, I've finally gone through and replaced all the audio's for CityWalk with my audio that has less ambient crowd noise buzz, that is in the first posts from that show. (Except for "Oh My" which I didn't record due to technical issues.)

So the audio is clearer like the "Caley vid's" versions of IITS and "My Cake" (compared to the first time they were posted), but I'm not sure if it's worth 'reposting', in effect 'double posting' the vid's, with clearer audio's...

I'm thinking the only one worth reposting (Other than IITS and MC) is WYDK since it's her first live performance of it. The other songs, (WT, HTGR, Free, BATJ ) we've heard several performances of....

I can't get enough of this vid since I posted it . I love Haley's ability to harmonise and her buttery smooth tone is a perfect complement to the rougher, and more manic tone of Casey's

There are parts of IITS and TMSG where her melody and harmonizing is heavenly

There is a quality, an energy in the LA debut of "My Cake" (Love her scat at the end of the song) that is unmatched in any of her Vegas performances of the song IMO, I think it comes from the preternatural chemistry between Haley and Casey, I love watching the fun when they are on the stage together,

I have to agree with you Tusk. I had only listened to "My Cake" a couple of times from City Walk before the Vegas shows where I heard it live each night. I really thought it sounded great in Vegas until I listened to the City Walk version again. Then I realized how much better I liked the version with Casey. It's like he brings out the best in her and she seems carefree and happy when she sings with him. In Vegas she was enjoying herself but at City Walk she was having FUN. Maybe some of it had to do with the age of the audience or size of the crowd but IMO the City Walk "My Cake" is a much better performance and more fun to watch.

Tusk, thanks for splicing together the Casey and Haley duets in one video with your audio and Team Haleyfans for filming. I agree, Haley enjoys herself and has a lot of fun with Casey. I have a good time when they perform together.

Haley really shows off her scatting dexterity at the CityWalkLA show. I’m amazed at her scatting in “My Cake”, but I am most attracted to her scatting on “The Flintstones”. I love when Haley goes into that lower register and there is one section where she swings with it and Casey’s facial expression and head shaking back and forth says it all. Reminiscent for me of Ella Fitzgerald, just heavenly. I’m no expert, I just know that I like that part a lot. Also, there is one point where Haley matches Casey’s sometimes craziness in his scatting and she is having a blast doing it and so am I.

I really enjoy the scat in Santeria, and lets not forget those at Mayfields playhouse either.

What I love about her scats is that they are not any generic style forced into a song in a way they don't fit... not maters of indulgence ever. To sort of elaborate ont he thought: I would not really call her Cake Scat a jazz scat.. it was more a rock scat IMO (although where rock/jazz/blues divide is like unpealing an onion.

I'd appreciate the Flintstones and the Moaning scats more as jazz scats. Her Moanin performances have varied between some performances (idol) with more "big band era" sounds to it, and other times with casey it can be more a type of bluesy (almost workers era/ buegrassy). The feeling of the scats she uses each time vary according to her interpretation style throughout on the given day. . Her little scatin the Flintsones fit the the time and Place of the Flintsones PERFECTLY... think of some manic scenes from Rocky and Bullwinkle ? or maybe in the comic scenes in I Dream of Genie or Bewitched? Her mind and mouth just fell into that perfect groove seemlessy after being put on the spot with only a minute or two of listening to get into the groove(might have not even needed that much time!)

The Mayfield club God Bless the child... sung in a late 30's ish Harlem Renesaince style and (the piano player started that way before Haley even sung too... mayfield continued..that was not a dixieland musical performance - it was of an important era of Holiday's life and and important Jazz era and the licks on the piano probably confirmed she go that way.. had the pianist started with a honky-tonk piano type of blues she'd likely have sung it more like her Idol Hollywood sound (in the direction)

I appreciate her Santeria Scat as .. well it was a playful sort of Vaudville - song and dance routine.. meant to cheer in a warm sort of corny uninhibited way ala Gene Kelly in Singing in the Rain(although a sound that predated that.. the vaudeville hollywood still had not to far behind in the collective memory and culture. I am not quite clear how the vaudville thing fits into the song... but I'm taking it there was some "campiness" to it when Sublime wrote it-- they filmed the video for it as a silent western with all the sort of cheesy "farce" feel . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEYN5w4T_aM

She's so good... can so easily take on the "persona" (for lack of a better word right now) of the time and place and history of the sound she's covering.

Oh.. I love to hear her sing when she is at her most relaxed and confident (she is always confident of course, and never ever bad.. but even Hall of Fame athletes have games that define their superstardom in the highest splendor.)
... and she is so comfortable with a sweep of sounds and history in a way you don't see (the only other recent group I can think of with that ability to step into different sounds in musical history is the kids in the Pentatonix)

I was ready to do battle with NoWits & KP after I peeked into IDF for the first time in months and saw them Poo Pooing Haley's BG Days gig as a small kiddie show using amateur backup family musicians... But I figured why bother? Let those morons show their ignorance when all the YouTubes get posted.
