I've always liked this acoustic version of Free. Part of it may be that I think Haley looks great.

There was a period Haley really had it going with John on acoustic guitar. I guess the period went strong right up through the Stag- it performance. Then, for whatever reason, it ended or stopped or went into hiding or ?
There is no question Keith has a distinct Jazz style.. to a degree he creates adn brings his own sounds to Haley's songs. He knows the jazz standards etc., which has been very helpful to Haley in terms of being read to play the Las Vegas shows and some others. (I also wish I could hear that private home concert with Keith on the accoustic piano... I suspect I would have loved that ---(im not going to get it wrong.. but was it Buzz?)
Haley might have been a niche playing live for indie bands with the John on acoustic guitar. I suppose that belongs in the Paul McDonald thread.

Miguel ... I've been looking for those restaurant performances online... and briefly in the forum here.. I'm not sure why I couldn't find them, but I was yearning for them. Thank you.
Wild Horses with Slash and Myles Kenned also has me coming back. What and incredible, graceful, beuatiful performance. It doesn't make my top list, only because the song itself, beautiful as it is, is too wistful and metered for me... still a beautiful and classic song. Great performance.

What are my own very favorites?
How do they put it on the radio shows ? "Desert Island" picks; If you were stranded on and Island cut off from other music or new performances which songs/performances would you want with you ? (usually those are a list of 3)
3) Santeria at stageit? That performance always makes me so happy ! ... so very very happy. and proud ? removes worries and misgivings I might be having about things I can't undo? Her rendition of an already cool song has a sassy and playful making light of things of not being concered with what one can't express (I really want to know, I can't define) and a hyperbolic expression of taking things in your own hands (The Challenge to the force that's trying to bring you down "daddy has a new fort-five.. stick it down your throat"... obviously that isn't meant to be taken literally ... but it is a sort of "hey, I'm not going to let your talk take me down . I want catch her silly, reveling flight-of-fancy in scat and bring it around with me wherever I go.
2) God Bless The Child With Irvin Mayfield. -- Haley canslur the words all she wants. In the end, the performance and interpretation becomes. a musical expression of marching to the beat of ones own drummer, with a bit(whiff) of a defiance in it, and certainly an with some strut and a gusto in places. Irvin is a large part of it I can't forget the opening licks by the piano player either. Over all, the redition matches humility and humor about what doesn't make sense about things. Their performances are full of overreaching, with frequent reaches up towards places that can't be sustained, knowing that in advance but trying anyway having expressed the aim, then falling back to safety in a wonderful cascade.
(for me of course) The style to two of them used that night emphasized emotions and view of the world I'm trying to express.. struggle to find ones own way in the muddle and put your chin up and head high . A feeling saying " don't worry about the rules that are trying to be put on you" "god bless those that find their own"
Those sorts of textures that fall flat and can be cloying in words... can be expressed with choices in performance... and I feel all that. I can't prove it... but I feel it. All that matters is that performances reach people in that way, not that they reach all people in that way. If I could find others that express all of that to me... maybe then it coudl be "not that great'? No, I can't say that... if there is something that I haven't heard and it feels right I'm not going to quibble about any overreaching for fancyness that ultimately made me feel that way... it worked.. worked gloriously!t
....
Ont to my choice for number 1:
1) Idol Benny and the Jets... probably would have been the original one had I never heard of her as a performer. Knowing the whole story and her personality etc, I'd choose the "Victory Celebration" version. I have no bitterness about it.
That was a wonderful end to the season for me. The official end was irrelevant and I didn't even think about it. I did turn in the next week for the very fun variety show with all the contestants back together singing with stars (tony bennet et all)
(Song itself starts at 3:45 so cut to there)
Haley's was the best Victory Song I've ever seen on idol !
OOH But they're weird and they're wonderful ! what an anthem to personal pride of the individual!

And yes... I think that some that see an "attitude" in Haley.. actually have evidence beyond the cheap Idol edits.
We can share what a warm and helping person she is .. how she is actually humble in the way I find humble to mean.. to admit ones short comings.. and poke fun at them
But... I do think , what I've expressed about the above songs.. and that I see, and that I LOVE, are things that many other people also see and dislike. They don't like people who are the own judge of themselves...even if they are fair judges in admitting short comings.. the very idea that people define their own success in ways that are indifferent to other's paths they choose for themselves(and not critical at all, just happy that others succeed by their own terms you don't seek to aspire to)... well .. that pisses many people off...
Now.. I don't think many of you see it like I do... or to the extreme.. but some people who speak badly see it as I do.. but they don't celebrate or laud it, but find it unsettling. Me... ? thats why I love her and pick those songs I find nurture me most that way.
