Haley Reinhart's funky a$$ reality project

Tusk and mercfan, thanks for making it easy for me, particularly you, Tusk. Back when this issue initially surfaced, I had tried to formulate a response but was simply too sleep deprived to be able to do it well, given how quickly the landscape was changing.

There is an old saying about "walking a mile in (fill in the blank) shoes," which seems to have originated from from an American Indian proverb "Never criticize a man until you’ve walked a mile in his moccasins." That likely came from the "Trail of Tears," which was a result of an unconscionable act that the Andrew Jackson dealt Native Americans. (Sorry, Miguel, I know that crosses the "no politics" line, even though it was a long time ago.)

Bottom line is that none of us here are in Haley's shoes (which are maybe a 6 1/2 or 7, medium width with ridiculously high heels). With the exception of leaks, Haley allows us to see what she wants, whether it's because she's not social media savvy or, perhaps, that she's social media wary. (Yes, that last part is speculation.)

John, yes people will speculate. However, speculation doesn't need to be made public. Last fall, when the Chicago NOJO show was announced and Haliens here were "speculating" on the why, I made a comment (based on how I know musicians tend to think), then toddled off to catch "zzz's" that I don't get during the work week.

When I was back online, much discussion had erupted, little of it having much basis in fact, all based on feelings and speculation. Most of all, there was the comment that my vague comment "was based on speculation," which it most certainly was not. In retrospect, I realize that, because my comment was vague (although at the time I didn't think it was), I probably deserved being told that I was "speculating." I chafed at that, and let it slide (well, sort of).

The weirdest thing was that in an interview with Mayfield (getting off the train prior to the Chicago gig), he confirmed what I had been thinking -- actually, even more. (While most of you see Mayfield as the musician, I see him as both musician and teacher, because he is both (and I so respect him for that)! And, ultimately, what I had been initially thinking was correct.

So enter into that "speculative" arena if you choose. But do remember how things get spin out of control here and elsewhere.

John, yes people will speculate. However, speculation doesn't need to be made public.

Absent information people do speculate, publicly and privately, and most conversations are full of speculation. Speculative comments here are common and recently include attributing perk delivery delays to corporate interests, management, promotional timing and contracts; creative and artistic talent but not living in structure; being right brained; a lack of CDs to send out; being a flower child; unease and discomfort with social media; viewing social media as a necessary evil; and to being old school (among others). I speculated that there are no corporate or contractual issues since this is Haley's project, and that it seems like procrastination. I observe that people don't usually object to speculation per se, but objections are made to perceived criticism directed toward Haley. C'est la vie.

I am skeptical about attributing her behavior to factors such as a flower child mentality or right brain dominance. Without adding a lot of further speculation, I am inclined to view Haley's behavior as pretty typical of many young adults. I have a son about her age and he is very focused and conscientious about things he cares about. But as for other things, not so much.

My primary issue is very simple: When you ask people to give you money with an explicit promise that you will give them something in return, you have an obligation to do so in a timely fashion. If you have a problem that interferes with the timely delivery of the item then you should let those who are affected know what's up. Kind of old school notions.

The perk thing is going about how I figured it would. For the most part my expectations are very low as I take a wait and see attitude. I am impressed that she got the lyrics out. As for the rest, maybe she will get to them maybe she won't. I'm not holding my breath because I would probably die waiting.

I have to agree whole-heartedly with John. I am just so puzzled why she has not taken about an hour of her time to post an update on the perks to Twitter, FB, IG, and via IndieGoGo. I got the signed picture perk and I am hoping that the pic will be from the video shoot, so I am being patient, given that is still ongoing. But it would be nice to hear from her that she is working on the perks other than the lyrics and will get them out as soon as she can. She also has not given an update on the MP3 file that was supposed to go to all the donors to the project.

Maybe someone can ask her tonight at the show about the situation…..?

I think Haley has so much goodwill with her fan base that we let these things go, but there will come a tipping point when there could be more backlash and bad PR for her. Some have already called her out on Twitter asking “where is my perk?”...

She is trying to relaunch herself with the video and now this other new project and I think she needs all the positive vibes and karma she can get, so hopefully she will not upset her fans with a lack of follow through on the perks.

So come on Haley! Get on social media, send out a simple note giving an update, so everyone can cool their jets about this!

I guess I'm just old school and I think fans expect too much interaction with the subject of their fandom. The video isn't finished yet, so I don't see why it is considered not timely.

That's not to say that things couldn't go smoother. But Haley's one person. And she's a busy one person.

Despite what I said in my previous post, I don't think it's asking too much to at least drop a note if not to update progress, at least a way to show that the perks haven't been forgotten.

I do think that perhaps the thinking might have changed to getting it accomplished in timing with the videos' release, but who really knows but Haley

I do wish Haley would "deliver" her promised perks. There may come a time again when she wants to involve us fans with another "project". There will be less of a response if she doesn't follow thru on these promises.

I know she is busy, but if just one night, she stayed home instead of going out, and signed some cds, or recorded a couple "thank you videos", it could make a difference. When Haley was home over Easter, her mom had a few cases of cds ready to sell at Rocky Vanders. Maybe she needs her Mom to crack the whip!!

Hopefully, we'll get some updates tonight after her performance at Room 5!!
