Thanks for the update. I'm guilty of not checking that video often because the comments sometimes dismay me. The fact Haley can rack up that many views without maintaining an active YT channel, or posting a cover of well-known song, shows the lasting impression she made on many.

Unexpected vitriol

I and others tweet it now and then. There are a few Haliens out there that will tweet a string of Haley videos every so often, so it does still gather views. I still think it's a great effort she telegraphed what to expect was her vision for the video and I think they executed it better than even I expected.

Harry said as much a week before the video came out. In their mind, it didn't matter how well the video did, they were proudest that they were able to accomplish what they'd set out to do, by themselves, unfettered, their creativity and they were very proud of it.

It's a bit of a bummer we will never know how many views Yahoo took away. 'Only' 50K views looks underwhelming to others who don't know that the views on Youtube is not accurate how many people have viewed the video. Haley indicated they did VERY well the day of the debut, but unfortunately those numbers can't be added to the Youtube count. I think if the true view count were known, some may not have as dour an opinion of the video as they do. I think some of the complaining comes from people seeing the YT view count and voicing their opinion on why it 'failed'....

On the Other Hand, as Haley told us, she learned some lessons with that part of the process, but couldn't be brought down about it because she was so elated at what she and her friends were able to accomplish

^^ I'm not sure that Yahoo took away any views, regardless of how many they pulled in. If Yahoo got a huge number of views at their site and viewers got excited about the video, I would expect that would spill into YouTube. It seems to me that Haley obtained more publicity through Yahoo than she would have through other available means. Regardless of expectations among those who were paying attention, the song and the video fell flat. I think Yahoo generated views that for the most part would never have been otherwise.

I think that has a little to do with it having no real promotion strategy, pretty much only her fans and a few media knew about it. It didn't get to generate any kind of media build up that a label backed project might get....

When I say, "took away', I mean it in the context of how it was initially perceived, ie: How much initial interest it got....I mean as far as the 'public' viewed it. It's hard to get excited about a video when critics come out of the woodwork exclaiming it's failure because of how many YT views it had... It's certainly not a 50K view video....

I think the purpose of going the direction they did with Yahoo was not only that they could give it some good press (and with a well known Idol media person ) I imagine that they might've got $omething for being an 'exclusive' debut for the first Day from potential ad views generated.

It didn't look like they counted on making money from putting it on iTunes since they generated little if no publicity for that either

I think alot of fans thought it was Haley's big introduction back into the game, which it wasn't. From it's inception, it was a 'pet project' something they wanted to try and get the fans involved in. Haley, from day one, said as much. Something for the fans.... she still says that when she intro's the song. Therein was another disappointment felt by some fans, they thought they were investing in helping launch Haley into the limelight, when that was never Haley's intention for the video, evidenced by how little effort was put into promoting, distributing or selling it.

If I recall correctly there were several articles and tweets that linked to the Yahoo page with the video (The Yahoo video was also embedded in many of the articles about SMYM too)... I think it's a good guess that "viewers excited about the video" used those links/tweets back to Yahoo to see the video again.... I know I saw it several times on Yahoo. I bet many were still linking back to the Yahoo page even after it was put on Youtube, further "taking away" views from YT even weeks after it was posted on Youtube

I agree with John that Haley benefited from the publicity. But it's also likely true that if the "official" video had more initial views people might have seen it as more worthy of passing along.

For that matter, if the video had gone more viral, Haley might have treated it as less of a pet project and more of a vehicle to attract attention.

I think SMYM is not dead. It is getting 100 or more hits a day. GBTC at Irving's club is a little over 140k. Every body made a big deal about that. There are many new videos on YT every day and most are lucky to get a few 100 hits. The fact that SMYM is getting 100 or more a day means that a lot of people are still checking it out or going back to listen again. Slow and steady wins the race

I just want to throw it out there that one thing that would boost the number of views SMYM's is getting, & especially the # of subscribers Haley has on her YT channel, is if she just adds more videos.

It may be that Haley knows she'll be getting her VEVO channel back in the near future, so building her indie channel isn't a big priority.

Right now Haley has:
Indie - 1 Vid/813 Subscribers
Vevo - 7 Vids/18,477 Subscribers

Her # of subscribers on both channels are slowly increasing, but when she gets ready to start promoting her new EP (and I mean way before it drops), she'll need to spend time adding content & really building one of those channels.
