Postmodern Jukebox: The Making of a Multi-Million View YouTube Music Channel

Noticing the success others were having on YouTube, Bradlee decided to start his own channel. One of his earliest videos, a medley of 80′s pop hits arranged for ragtime piano, quickly went viral. “That gave me the bug, basically. I recorded this video, put it up there, and pretty soon, more people had seen this video than had seen me play in my entire life.”

In the second half of the 20th century, live performances used to serve as “loss leaders” for the real product: record sales. But in the digital age, that arrangement practically reversed, with recorded music acting as something of a loss leader for concerts, where the real money can now be made. Thankfully, Bradlee has found that online video streaming can act as a driver for both concerts and recorded music sales, while providing a reasonable revenue stream itself.

Ultimately, Postmodern Jukebox is a YouTube channel that proves a great idea, delivered consistently and well, with some savvy for marketing and promotion, is all you really need to build a big audience. With a minimum of equipment and surplus of only time and talent, Scott Bradlee and his players have developed a live music performance channel with millions of views. Web surfers come for the viral sizzle. Listeners stay because it turns out it comes with a big hunk of steak.

I found it interesting that PMJ has a big enough following that they can sell tickets to a meet-and-greet ("Pre-Show Mingle").

The Pre-Show Mingle costs more than the tickets. And it costs more in Europe than in the U.S. ($60 and $70 versus $40).

Show tickets look to be about $35.

In terms of covering their expenses, this is a good time for a European tour -- last week the euro slid to a nine-year low against the dollar.

Let’s say that in June you had a charming dinner for two in Paris for 75 euros. First, congratulations. Second, it cost $103 then; today it would be $89. Expensive countries may not be cheap, but at least they’re more affordable now.

On the other hand, demand for travel is so strong that most airlines don’t have to cut prices to sell seats.

After moving to NYC, Mykal quickly made his Broadway debut as a member of the tribe in Hair. On November 15, 2010, he gave his first NYC solo concert, The New Guy!, at The Triad. He was a member of the Off-Broadway cast of Freckleface Strawberry and in the production of Band Geeks at the The Human Race Theater Co.

After a run with the Book of Mormon national tour, Mykal returned to Broadway to appear in Motown: the Musical. He continues to be in high demand to perform in concerts around New York City, helping rising songwriters to show off their work.

The miniature drummer is interesting.

Arrangements really do make a difference, don't they? Perhaps that's not what you don't care about it, but from my perspective, as great as what the band is playing is, the arrangement doesn't do justice to this song.

I disagree, I think the " " is waranted.

PMJ's 'angle' is turning a popular song on it's head, Haley's "Habits" is a great example of doing it in a 'good way', a 'light/happy' arraignment in which contained "dark/sinister" lyrical content,

In the newest video, they certainly 'flipped' the song, but in a 'bad way' IMO, thus the necessity for the " " to separate it from their many previous successful flippings of songs
