Yes..that's one of the biggest reasons why her songs are hard to sing. She doesn't really leave time to take a breath because she knows how to sneak it in there, and she doesn't need the gap that most artists need.

She's also a human autotune...and I swear the notes she can choose in a song are actually harder to sing than a lot of songs. I don't really know why..but my best guess is she likes to flip between head voice, chest, mix..and then on top of that..minor and major notes..or something she chooses to do..is just remarkably difficult. Because even trying to copy the melody is hard (it's just not innate to a person..)

But the short answer is, even though I'm not the biggest fan of Grimmie the vocalist (as a person, she's absolutely adorable..and she seems to be a bit like Casey where she forms connections with everyone, and everyone seems to love her)..but I think she does as good of a job as most very good vocalists would do on that song.

She lacks the Grit the song requires, that Reinhart accent, to really pull off the driving determination of the message...

This performance is really injured by that sub par squeaky background vocal Tongue

Grimmie shines in her head voice, not so much in her belting. She'd do a much better job with "Free" than this one.

And I think any of the newer songs..which have a gutsy bluesy feel to them, would be a struggle for her.

Which, I thought the clip of "Better" with Haley's father (the recent one) really sounded like a ZZ Ward track. I would not mind in the slightest if Haley's direction was similar to that. I've been playing out ZZ for weeks now. Tongue

(i know this is getting off topic, but i do want to say this)The entire reason she lost is because for so many weeks in a row she just started screaming the songs. Adam really did a bad job as a coach for her. He probably told her that she does things in the competition that no one else can do and she went off the rails with it. My favorite performance of hers was that duet with ed sheeran that highlighted the beautiful qualities in her voice and she barely belted out in the sing. A performance like that would have probably won her the competition along with all of her YouTube fans.

I wouldn't mind a bluesy direction, she seems to say 'funk' alot when describing what she wants to do, seems that's what she wants this go around. I wonder if that'll disappoint her newly attained jazz fans, to the 'general public' she's known more for her Jazz than anything on the blues, rock side... BICO, Irvin Mayfield, Scott Bradlee... I think the last major 'rock' performance might have been as far back as "Wild Horses" with Slash :/

I didn't expect the tone of the backlash to SMYM, it'll be interesting what comes up next. I think the negativity will be less 'bitter'. I think the thing that people didn't like about it was how produced it sounded to them. Hopefully Jazz fans will hang around long enough to appreciate her other flavors. She's expressed a desire to do a jazz album, so something for every one Big Grin
