Earlier tonight, I was thinking about how it sucked that crap music was all the rage now. But then I thought, it's actually better for Haley because she's one of the few in the public eye making music the "traditional" way.

I guess I have to classify myself as a diehard refugee from the 60s and 70s. The era of classic rock. For Haley making music the traditional way is to do it the right way. There was a female artist called Kim Carnes I think that's her name, but she did a song called Bette Davis eyes love to hear Haley do that song.

It is a good place to be, hopefully early and well-prepared for a shift toward more traditionally made music. Adele has shown the potential of the market. As I have learned more about the McSong manufacturing process and listened to a lot more current music than I have in the past decade, I can see I wasn't missing anything. Formulaic hooks and trite lyrics that emphasize tawdry sexuality, degradation, and in-your-face swag are the fat, sugar and salt of the fast-music industry.

Although the play count on the search does not continually update (making an exact count impossible), my official tally of plays of Free in the first 24 hours is 110,000. That is a good start.

I know the song but can't say I have a strong compulsion for Haley to cover it.

I was 18 when that song came out and working at a hip, independent gift shop. I have fond memories of working there with attractive girls from several high schools while listening to the latest music -- the owner gave us permission to play whatever music we wanted.

I most fondly recall working with a blonde girl named Liz because we would pretend we were married and that her parents had bought the shop for us. There was another girl named Karen. We reconnected through Facebook last year and I met her face-to-face for the first time in nearly 30 years. She's still married to a guy she met through the shop and is now on the verge of retirement.

Currently the majority of comments on YT are coming from outside the U.S. Asia is hot right now, probably because it is latter in the day. Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia are all represented, as well as Mexico, France, Slovakia, and Canada. The comments are overwhelmingly positive right now and there are many teenagers among the listeners.

Miguel, this was precisely why I pointed out that BICO doesn't specifically mention Christmas (when it came out). For the southern hemisphere, it's summer during the Christmas season. However, if the song is thought of as a "seasonal" song, then there is more flexibility for it to be played when it's winter "down under."
