In an effort to stem steep ratings declines, Dancing With the Stars is changing its tune. After the move last year to a combined performance and results show failed to give the ABC reality flagship a lift, producers are overhauling the show with more current music, a new co-host in Fox Sports' Erin Andrews and increased audience participation.
Dancing is still a force in total viewers, averaging 15 million last season, but those viewers are now 62.1 years old, making it the grayest broadcast show not on CBS. In the key 18-to-49 demographic, Dancing hit an all-time low 2.5 average rating last season.
The play for younger viewers, which saw veteran co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet and longtime bandleader Harold Wheeler axed, hasn't been without strife. The American Federation of Musicians president Ray Hair blasted the decision by ABC and producer BBC Worldwide to drop Wheeler and his 28-member orchestra, describing it as "artistic fraud." The new, smaller band led by Ray Chew will be more focused on current hits -- prerecording the more produced elements in lieu of using costly master tracks. "This was a creative decision to increase the amount of live music on the show," says Green, who maintains Dancing still will emphasize the band. "The way the union responded on this, without ever talking to us, was pretty poor."

Quote:Dancing With the Stars is in its 20th season, and is celebrating its 10th anniversary of airing on television (it airs in spring and fall). For a show that’s practically ancient by reality television standards, it is still delivering some surprisingly big numbers in the ratings.
Its March season premiere brought in 14 million viewers and won that Monday night, and that is coming off a fall season that had its highest finale numbers in four years. The show, which featured dances from Disney movies last night, still ranks in the top 10 (except for the weeks with sporting events like NCAA Basketball).
That all sounds impressive, but those big numbers don’t tell the whole story. Fourteen million people watched the premiere, but the show dropped 17 percent from it’s fall 2014 season premiere in the key 18-49 demographic, to a 2.0 rating.
...both ABC shows are getting hammered on Monday nights by NBC’s The Voice, which rules in that key demo, earning a 4.1 rating in key demos for its March 2015 premiere, and a 3.3 rating against DWTS’s season premiere.

According to the PMJ website their tour starts the next night-Nov 3 in Baltimore.
She is going to be one busy girl. Philly and a music video this week, DWTS and starting her PMJ tour next. I am tired just thinking about that.
