I don't follow Phillip, but from posts on mjs alot of what has been reported for this is inaccurate.

-Like Haley, Phillips' parents were helped with travel to see him by their community. They did not have to spend 'a ton' of money on it...and if they blew their wad on travelling just to see him, then that's on them and they're not very smart with their money (which I doubt is the case). I doubt his parents are that short sighted to think they can retire and live off his 'winnings'
-As we know from Haley, Phillip probably has to spend whatever they have advanced him on his shows or travel or whatever. Last on his list to spend his advance on are hangers on, or those who know him and think they deserve something for knowing him... 
-It doesn't end after he is crowned and sings his coronation song. The iron is hot and he has to act now. He seems pretty intelligent and probably understands the work he puts into his career now will go a long way towards making a more successful career for himself in the future. The last thing he needs is 'dead beat' relatives and acquatences (which I'm not calling his family, but that's what TMZ is portraying the situation to be)
-Let's not forget about his medical condition that probably requires some maintaining. It's not known if his medical procedure during AI was covered by Idol, but I have to imagine that this is a condition he has been and will be costing him financially.
-More than likely, the 'family source' is a disgruntled or fame seeking parasite who TMZ seems to attract. If this situation were anywhere near as 'bad' as TMZ implies, there would be many more 'sources' with this info, including people who have no interest in Phillips' finacial windfall.
that makes sense because i've been assuming that this story may have been leaked by possibly a disgruntled relative.
