While I don't doubt the music industry is a tough nut to crack, especially with the consolidation of media outlets, I don't think there is literally a club where they flash symbols to one another.

What I do think is there are powerful people in the industry who use their positions to promote their favorites over others because they stand to gain financially. I could see them "recruiting" someone they think might have widespread appeal, but it would be more of a seduction.

i.e., "Fame and wealth will be yours if you do things our way. Now put this outfit on and start twerking when you hit the chorus of 'Undone.'"
