RE: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
I really really like them.
But I have to say, the song "She Keeps Me Warm," by Mary Lambert may be one of the most beautiful love songs that I have ever heard. (The Acoustic version.) The equality and embracing who you are is a great message, but just the song itself is gorgeous.
In terms of not having a major label. I think what Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have done for music is incredible, and hopefully there will be a new wave of musicians that start doing this.
I make most of the posts in the Michelle Chamuel thread, and one of the really "freeing" things about being a fan of hers is that she's in complete control of her music. She's writing songs with her former bandmates, collaborating with the people she wants to collaborate with (including the previously mentioned Mary Lambert..and Darren Criss and obviously Usher are possibilities.) She has 100% creative control. She's releasing music when she wants to and as often as she wants too. Since the voice, a few collaborations have been released (the most recent one called "Not Now"), a single, and a full length album that she essentially did everything on (and she calls it her electronic side project.) An upcoming EP that's more electronic pop, as well as an LP that's more pop. She's releasing so much music that she has different names she goes by different aliases to brand her music.
Obviously this type of a situation isn't doable for every artist. Coming from a huge music program (University of Michigan), she's well connected. She knows how to produce/create her own material from start to finish. And she understands the business aspect of it. (finances..) I know she's never going to be a huge star (she doesn't want that anyway, I don't think..) but as a fan..I get to see her create music that is completely her..and not worry about sales numbers..because she's not going to drop herself. Whereas with any artist on a major label that isn't huge..there's that fear.
