Miguel, yet another good find. I would suggest that Loesser's "high brow origins" provided him with something else: a good foundation in music, particularly playing it. Knowing one's way around a keyboard and understanding the basic nature of chord progressions certainly would help in composing.
I would further suggest that even if he wasn't aware of this influence, he grew up in an age when the Gershwin brothers, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, and Jerome Kern were stars of the popular music world. And they produced some fairly sophisticated "low brow" music.
