RE: Haley in New Orleans for Mardi Gras 2014
Miguel, if you think this should be in a different thread, please feel free to move it.
Earlier this week, I finally ordered a Mayfield/Marsalis (Ellis) CD, got it today, and am truly enjoying the listening. The CD was released in 2008, but according to the liner notes, initially much, if not all of the recordings had been done before Katrina hit.
It's interesting to see the IM/HER overlap on the songs. The two of them have already performed Come Rain or Come Shine together -- although I do wish that the arrangement that Haley had been given (arranged by IM) had been closer to the one on this CD than their Chicago version (the tempo is more upbeat and it seems more Haleyesque as a result).
But Don't Know Why and Like a Star are both on it, which to me, begs the idea of the two of them performing those songs together. In addition, on the CD is Stevie Wonder's You and I, which I think Haley could "sell" (sing) well and also A House Is Not a Home. I'd like to hear a "Haley take" on that. There is also Ellington's In a Sentimental Mood, which would probably be fine, but it makes me think of Serenade in Blue, which I'd prefer to hear the two them tackle.
I'm enjoying the CD as it is (Mayfield does some amazing things, and well, there is a reason that Ellis Marsalis is revered), but I think, as good as it is, it would be enhanced by Haley's vocals.
