Not all great performers and singers can either write or find the right songs that "strike a chord" with listeners.
No even the biggest stars with all the promotional muscle in the world can force people to like their next songs... ... bit of wind at their backs but far from any guarantee's and they rarely can make 3 or 4 songs from a new album hit.
That's one of the things I really like about Lake Street Drive ... I liked their originals even more than their covers when I bought their first two albums. (I liked their first album more than their second though and I"m less sure about a few songs I heard that might be on a third).
The Pentatonix are great but it is a big transition .
Then again I think many great name singers from long ago made their careers singing songs made popular by other singers. Did Ella Fitzgerald sing more than a smattering of songs that she was first to record? I'm not sure they really should feel they need to write their own music to "go the next step" if that would create a self impression that doing covers was now beneath them or something. I hope they don't start to feel that they moved beyond covers and make it a "And" , not an "or"

Good points, Tom. One would think that if writing or doing original material were something the group wanted to do, they would have released something already. I'd hate for this group to bow down to label pressure only to lose what they (and we) know they do extremely well.
