"OOPS...I DID IT AGAIN!" with PMJ

Aparently the song was involved in a little bit of an internet hubub when a couple guys thought it'd be funny to record it in a "louis Armstrong' voice They posted it with a fake byline about how it OIDIA was originally recorded by Louis.

“Oops! I Did It Again” was recorded in April, 1932 in a Chicago studio, most likely Nearlie’s or West and Forth. Cut for the Decca label by Louis Armstrong and elements of Zilner Randolph’s touring group, “Oops!” failed to make the chart impact of “All of Me,” another side recorded in the same session, and soon fell out of print.

The song remained all-but-forgotten until sixty years later when a young Britney Spears sent her interpretation of the Armstrong tune all the way to the top of the charts.

Of course, as things often do, it spread quickly on the Internet, leading to the creators making it clear that it was just a harmless activity they thought would be funny....

Dear Consumer-

As you may know, Supermasterpiece created somewhat of an Internet Sensation a week or two ago, when we posted this song.

Basically, we thought it would be funny to do a version of the Britney Spears classic "Oops! I Did It Again" and claim it had originally been recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1932. Supermasterpiece regular Shek Baker does a pretty funny Louis Armstrong impersonation, and our friend Kurt blows a mean trumpet in the Satchmo style. We had one of our interns play a simple midi- accompaniment, then we recorded everything using a computer. We made it sound kind of tinny like an old record, and added a track of needle-in-groove ambiance for extra comic authenticity. We whipped up a hilarious fake album cover, and wrote a fake pretentious jazz explanation. When we were done, we posted it on our humble website.

PLEASE NOTE: The names of the Supermasterpiece employees involved are clearly displayed on the page... we were never trying to fool anyone. We just thought Shek sounded funny when he sang the word "oops" in a Louis Armstrong voice.

The next day, Supermasterpiece received a whopping (for us)17,000 visitors. The day after we received almost 60,000 visitors, as more websites picked up on the story.

Many people got the joke, for which we are eternally grateful. Unfortunately, most did not (and notice how carmen_rulz was well aware that Louis Armstrong had originally recorded the track), despite the fact that we (once again) CLEARLY LISTED OUR NAMES AS PERFORMERS ON THE PAGE. Also, as I have since learned, the song is too long to be a side of a 78, wax cylinders were no longer used in 1932, and Shek apparently sounds more like Yoda or Cookie Monster than Louis Armstrong. Plus, a very helpful commenter on the metafilter site has stated that someone would have to be "brain dead" to play the piano like that.

Brain dead. That hurts, anonymous commenter. That really hurts. How does it feel to have made an intern cry?
