He is the reliable substrate on which Haley can soar. As that, he needs to be solid and steady, not distracting or overpowering or full of flurries. I think it works because his straightness allows Haley to flutter freely.
Also it is PMJ, weekly videos, playing and combining and seeing what happens - not out to create an undying superhit every time but to explore music in a creative way that is enjoyable. Sometimes gems drop, at other times the motto is "ok, let's do a different one next week". I like this one for Haley's tone - not because it is the highlight of her career but because it is one very nice pebble along the path, worth picking up.
Perhaps sometimes it is also about personalities, who knows, maybe the clown is a great guy in person and it is just fun to do something with him!?
