Neara Russell '10, an eclectic composer and performer, has tapped a broad mix of revenue streams. An ASCAP member, Russell is a recipient of an ASCAPlus award and the 2010 Richard Levy Composition Award. Since moving to Los Angeles, she has worked as a keyboardist and background vocalist with pop artist BC Jean. She has also been performing her own pop and contemporary classical music, composing for music libraries, teaching, and appearing as a musician in movies and television shows. She is a passionate entrepreneur who has educated herself on all aspects of the music business. "Music is a service now," she says. "Publishing survives today because it is a service."

Here's another one from Louisville! Me and mista John Notto, my new guitar man.. Ever so serious

John Notto’s guitar playing can best be described as eclectic and that of a chameleon, maintaining a foot firmly planted in the roots of the blues-driven epic sounds of 70’s rock. from scorching epic rock solos, to playing smooth, warm, funky rhythm guitar, reminiscent of the tight rhythm sections of great bands like Tower of Power, James Brown, and Sly Stone, Johns playing includes it all. John draws his inspiration from, namely, Jimmy Page, Brian May, Angus Young, and Eddie Van Halen, while evoking his love for R&B and jazz greats like Eddie “Spanky” Alford, Cornell Dupree, Wes Montgomery, and Grant Green. All of these influences are fused cohesively by his open and experimental approach to music and creativity.

Professionally, Notto has been a working session and touring guitarist throughout the U.S. for the past 10 years. Getting his start in Portland, ME, he worked his way across New England, settling in both Boston and New York. John has toured the U.S. with various artists, including the Sam Kininger Band, Lettuce, Talib Kweli and Idol Warship, in addition to R&B singer Nigel Hall. in 2008, he recorded on Sam Kininger’s album “Anthem” which was released on BMG-Japan. While in Boston, john also held a residency gig for 3 years at the famed jazz club Wally’s Cafe, where he was able to perform with such session greats as Henry Butler (New Orleans pianist), Little Jon Roberts (Janet Jackson), Charles Haynes (Kanye West, Lady Gaga), and Louis Cato (Marcus Miller, Bilal).

"Interscope Recording Artist Haley Reinhart" That's rather formal. I wonder if they are coached to refer to her that way (instead of "Haley Reinhart from American Idol") or if it's simply recognition she's accomplished something most young musicians desire. Or if he mentioned it because it raises his own status.

Haley's dad most likely signed off on her "new guitar man" and thus we can be assured he's got the chops. The fact John Notto feels "elated to be working in a group like this" suggests the other musicians are no slouches either.

Funny to see Haley point that out. John has that typical serious rocker pose going --that won't last in Haley's world. He reminds me of Rick Derringer back in the day.

The impression I have is John Notto is eager to make his mark professionally and wants people to know he takes his craft seriously.

This could be his big break. Up to this point, he seems to have been scratching out a living. On his website he offers:

At the Tyler, TX appearance, Haley was asked about touring. She said they hoped to begin touring in June -- opening for a bigger act. Haley was coy when asked who that might be, saying she didn't know yet.
