RE: Drum Solos
^^^^^ Love it all! I want to reply to so many things. The people at this site post and say the best. But lucky for yawl, I have to run.
Before I head out the door I thought it would be fun to turture some of you with a little Yanni (definitely not everyone's cup of tea). But, I just love the drum solo in this song:
Charlie Adams Drums Solo - Yanni Live at Acropolis - 1994
Buddy Rich was billed as "the world's greatest drummer" and was known for his virtuosic technique, power, groove, and speed, but Neil Peart is still my personal favorite
But what do I know, hell I even like this video of Travis Barker:

RE: Drum Solos
Well, thx to LovinDa, I can now say I've heard a little Yanni and a little Drake
Charlie Adams, I like how his play added percussive emphasis to Yanni's piano playing at the beginning. Nice, crisp 'rat tat tat' drumming Thnx LovinDa'
Travis Barker, emotional and aggressive, maybe the stand out musician from his group. So lucky to have survived a plane crash.
Drummers who sing.....Hmmm two come off the top of my Head, but are more well known for their singing than their drumming....
Don Henley of the Eagles (I'm not sure if I've ever seen a Henley solo)
The Eagles are a tie with ELO for my 3rd favorite band after The Beatles and ABBA (In my younger days, you might find Tusk in a Kareoke Bar crooning "Hotel California" or "Desperado" ) Joe Walsh and Don Felder, Guitar players extra-ordinaire love their dueling solos in this song
Got to see these guys live (With both Felder and Walsh) on the "Hell Freezes Over" tour, and they were INCREDIBLE....what a night
And of Course Phil Collins stepped up to singing duties after Peter Gabriel left Genesis to pursue his solo career. I was going to post "In the Air Tonight" , but he doesn't drum much in that song so, let's just go with Phil doing some drumming (I believe the other percussionist's names are Chester Thompson and Luis Conte)

LOL --so "what (the hell) do you know" LovinDa? Well, you know what you like. Many don't, you know -- they just pretend.
The Charles Adams solo was -- meh. Given the "toys" he's surrounded by (Buddy Rich's drum set on steroids!) and the fact that the piece played to set up his solo is in 5/4, or perhaps 5/8 (think "Take 5" or the Mission Impossible theme) -- meaning that he had much to work with, he doesn't really do much with it. It's more like he's showing off the toys, without demonstrating any thought, thus no progression within the solo. To me, it seems somewhat adolescent. (However, to his credit, he is wearing a jacket [a loosely constructed one] and holds the left stick correctly.)
As for Travis Barker, the kindest thing that I can say is that his drumset has black drumheads and looks really cool!

I, too, remember Gene Krupa. He is the first drummer I saw do a drum solo. I think he, also, fashioned the first drum kit for drums as we know them today, but I could be wrong. I do have a case of bb's halfheimers most of the time..
BB's mother's "halfheimers" and "CRS" are priceless! And, for the record, Cherelann, I don't think you have "halfheimers" one quarter of the time.
"Kit" -- grrr. One of those infinitely silly terms that have taken hold to describe things they don't come close to describing, but got some ridiculous buzz from something.
Gene Krupa fashioned a drum "set," that became the backbone of what everyone else ultimately followed and added to.

RE: Drum Solos
Thanks MAE for pointing out that thing about Buddy Rich (respect to the audience in the way he dressed). My appreciation of him grew even more after reading your post.
But yawl betta just back up off my T-Bark!
Gene Krupa / Buddy Rich Drum Battle
Buddy Rich for the 'W'?
Rock on T-Man. I so wanted to see a show from the "Hell Freezes Over" tour. Oh well, I have the DVD and I know how to use it

Thanks Buzz, I added that video to my collection, along with this one:
