But to be honest who cares.She has the rasp and grit that can rock your socks off but than she can change up and sing you a Lullaby with the sweetness of an Angel. She always delivers a WTF moment IMO

Vocal type is tricky. Like I've seen Lana Del Rey listed as both a Mezzo-Soprano & a Contra-Alto even though she's capable of singing lower than most Contra's her vocal center (for lack of a better term) is higher than most of them.

Mezzo-Soprano is A3-A5
and Soprano is C4-C6

Does that mean that's the range of their chest voice alone or is that the strongest most natural part of their entire range?

Haley is definitely not a soprano.She may be capable of going into parts of that range fairly comfortably but her "meat and potatoes" is in the alto range even if it may towards the higher range of that.

If someone could find and post something from a true mezzo soprano I think you could hear the difference.

But it's all opera so I can tell the Mezzo has a 'deeper tone' over all, and does seem to be where she lives the most, but when they go for the higher notes (whistle?), I don't hear any difference

Edit: I may be hearing wrong, but I would say her normal singing vocal tends towards what I think is mezzo soprano, but when I listen to and compare the 'whistle' notes, Haley's whistle notes seem to lean on the side of soprano (sweeter.....?)

I don't know-the only time I've ever heard the term mezzo soprano actually used is when someone is referring to an opera or classical singer.I always thought that when it came to pop and jazz that it just alto-and that there's just higher and lower varieties.

The first time I've heard the term mezzo soprano was in describing AnniFrid Lyngstad of ABBA (The Brunette.... The Blonde, Agnetha, was a Soprano). AnniFrid sang Blues before she joined ABBA, but she was also a trained Opera Singer.

Not that I pay attention 100% but I seem to recall someone in an article referring to Haley as a Soprano.

Well, although Haley does have a great range, I'm not sure of the "4.7 octave range.**" And, until a couple years ago, I'd never heard the phrases "whistle notes" or a "whistle register." (Nor have any of the other musician folks I know heard of those phrases.) I have heard of "coloratura," which, apparently, is what "whistle notes" or the "whistle register" is actually referring to.

**That "just shy" of 5 octaves may be true, but I what I suspect may be more likely is that Haley has a standard vocal range -- let's say 4 octaves, which is amazing! Some days she's able to sing lower than she normally does, but may not be able to hit some of the higher notes that she was easily singing the day before. And then, maybe a couple days later, the lower range is gone, but the head voice has opened up to new possibilities. The standard range (that hypothetical four octaves) that she's able to sing any given day remains the same. It's just that in terms of where it lies within the scale, fluctuates. Have I been able to describe this in a way that makes sense?

Kaypea, I think that what you're calling alto is was we're calling mezzo-soprano. It's the middle female voice. And yeah, I'm thinking she might be a mezzo-soprano as opposed to a soprano.

Hmmm -- I think that I know what you're asking, but I'm not quite sure. If I understand you correctly, it's probably neither. Are you familiar with the piano keyboard?

Holy crap!! What have I done!! Just kidding.

It's a little difficult for me to tell much about Haley's voice from this but I did just realize one thing that annoys me about opera which is that it's sung almost entirely in falsetto.

I'll check out the other video you posted in a little while too Tusk. I've got to go walk my dog now though or he's going to poop in my living room.
