I've been looking at the IdolAnalytics site that was created by a guy who does statistics.

A brief history of the Bottom 3

...only 5 contestants stumbled out of the gate to make the Bottom 3, and then lasted quite a long time. Katharine McPhee went 8 rounds after her trip to come in 2nd in Season 5. Diana DeGarmo and Kimberley Locke both went 9 rounds in Season 3 after landing in the B3. Syesha Mercado was a real die hard, going 9 rounds after first appearing in the bottom 3 to finish 3rd against the Davids in Season 8.

Finally, the ultimate survivor: Haley Reinhart first landed in the Bottom 3 in the second round (Top 12) of last season. She went on 10 more rounds, until she finally fell to the country juggernaut of Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina.

These exceptions notwithstanding, after being in the Bottom 3, your days are numbered.

I remember that. It was a real treat during the dry spell between the show ending and the Idol tour. In retrospect, it took more coordination than I appreciated at the time. And Paul seems more mature than the others. Now he's all of 32 years old.

That's not surprising -- at least not to me. Had his schedule allowed, Jesse Tyler Ferguson would have made a far better judge than Randy and J-Lo combined. (I know -- that's not really saying much.) He has Broadway musical chops that could have been a useful perspective to some contestants. (He was one of the participants of the Broadway Carpool Karaoke from last summer, which, I think, is one of the best segments to date.)

JTF was an occasional guest judge on SYTYCD, and, while lacking in specific dance terminology as a basis to provide critiques, he was astute and entertaining! Not bad attributes for a judge on reality TV. And certainly offered more useful critiques than Jason Derulo!
