You're welcome Camden -- glad you're enjoying this group. I was playing them again over the weekend. I can't get enough of Rachel's voice. Here's a youtube video of her singing when she was twelve with a group her dad directed. The song is corny and the arrangement cornier, but few twelve year olds have a voice that sounds as mature as hers does.

MAE.. I just want to reiterate my thanks for the introduction to LSD

I've been listening to their albums everyday... (and just took a 6 hour drive each direction this weekend which added to that).....

I really really like their songs.. the lyrics and the melody and rhythms.. the whole package makes them so special. Certainly Rachel is an incredible talent and its not a "but" but an "AND" : the compositions are really live because of both all the performances and whoever and however they dreamed them up in the first place.

Have you seen any details anywhere on who or how they write the songs ? I saw one radio station interview/ we performances that slightly raised the question but not more than a passing reference or so.

I'll poke around but if anyone has found anything, I'd love to see what y'all found.

... not because I need answers to enjoy it but that I enjoy them so much I'd love any extra texture about them to appreciate ...

The trumpet/guitar player of @lakestreetdive is so cool, he was the actual inspiration of the Batman villain, Mr. Freeze.

He's a good fan for them to have. He's an Irish alt rock musician w/ 17.4K followers on twitter. His single "Take Me To Church" seems to be getting popular lately.



This video was posted in late Sept., 2013 & has almost 3 million views. But I think it was recently released in the U.S. In the past couple of weeks, it's moved up to #69 on the itunes alternative charts.

That's my guess, since you said they're touring Europe at the moment. Those were the only tweets though & I can't tell much from them other than he really likes them.

It also could be that he's known them for a while & since they're in Europe, He's tweeting his fans about them to show them some support & help them sell a few more tickets.

Noticed "Lucius" is playing the same day. Their 1st single "Turn It Around" is one of my favorites right now. It's got a great 60's girl group vibe to it.

Really Great and very long video on the Song Writing process by Lake Street Dive.

I'll admit i've only got through the first song and 20 minutes but I don't think i've ever seen musicians really touch on their process like this.

In the first segment Michael Olson discusses how he was inspired (he uses the word "ripped off" from Paul McCartney's "Gotta get you out of my life" but then goes on to explain how it is derivative and how almost all songs "rip things off". IMO after listening it was more a matter of being inpsired than "ripping off".... but very interesting to hear.. and that's just a starting place. Rachel talks about how even after Michael wrote the song, she felt it didn't really take form as their song until they arranged it together.

Also Mike Olson discusses the lyrics and how it's both about a love story and a song about drinking at the same time.

He says that Paul McCartney said flat out that Gotta Get you Outa my life was all about smoking pot (but Michael called him a liar on that haha.. and Midnight.. lol you might want to reinterpret the McCartney lyrics)



I'll give more synopsis of the other members of the group talk about songs they wrote as I take the time to listen to their portions of the nearly 2 hour lecture/symposium separately.

Tom, thanks for uploading this. I guess I thought about doing that so much I thought that I'd actually done so.

I've watched the entire video -- lucky N.E.C.M. students who were there in person! I found it interesting that they all write independently of the others and they each have a different approach - -at least they have different approaches given the song that they've chosen to discuss.

I found this to provide insight about the each of the members -- and the group as well.

BTW, for those who haven't watched it, the song Mike (McDuck) Olsen wrote (when referring to it as a "rip off" of Got to Get You into My Life) is You Go Down Smooth.
