Seriously, IMHO this is the purest, most intimate Haley moment since Like a Star. Thank you for another great video and for the amazing audio rehab!!! Unbelievable improvement!

The credit goes to one of Team HaleyFans, he sent me several variations of the audio with different tweeks to it, varying degrees of compression/cleaning, but it was this version that gave me the slight 'body buzz' that reminded me of the one I was experiencing the night as I was filming it.

In my limited experience with audio editing, you have to find that balance between 'cleaning' something and losing it's organic quality. Often if you try to affect it too much, there are residual audio artifacts from the removal you might hear, making it sound compressed or 'electronically' affected.

This version most closely matched the purity I remembered hearing in Haley's voice that night, while greatly reducing the volume of the ambient hiss.

It's hard to explain, there are times hearing Haley sing live, she hits that zone that gets all the endorphins rushing in your body, it's so pure. This intimate performance was one of those times

1080…Transformative, Tusk! You lost the hiss, got great definition, and turned on the lights (not that Haley nor Irvin noticed, but that’s probably for another thread!).
I have a question or suggestion: With all the money you and the other gracious Haley reporters/videographers spend for travel, tickets, expenses, and equipment, have you ever pursued press passes? Considering the famed video police, seating locations, noise, etc., this could be a game changer. Plus some really nice perks and treatment like a “para-celebrity.” The downside is that if Yanni had been so credentialed the other day we probably would not have had the amazing view that he got on the stealth. Just an idea.

I originally posted how I went about 'improving' on the detail without whitewashing the scene (what often happens when one tries to 'brighten' video) But decided on brevity so deleted it

IMO, It was important to keep the intimate feel that the darkness contributed to the video, but I knew there was detail there to be had, so the challenge was to enhance the detail without brightening it up and losing the atmosphere of intimacy

As far as, 'press passes' I imagine you'd have to be part of a legitimate press group to get one?

Besides, at many of these shows, there are 'legitimate' photographers with high powered expensive equipment already ahead of the game. Given that we rarely get any notice about these Haley events, hard enough to make the show, let alone apply for a press pass

Super job and great description of "the cooking" . Really this type of balance lets me hear what I love so much... the cracks and pops are well worth the piano attack the breathy-ness associated with a person playing a trumpet and so many harmonic twists in her "buzzes" and attacks Haley herself uses.

I really liked how she was all about her music. She said she wants to impact people with her music and some pop stars are just putting out singles for the easy money, where she wants to share her album as a story. I admired that about her. She said she is a chameleon when it comes to genres. She likes doing what she feels like. I asked her what keeps her sane and she said her parents help keep her sanity. Her next album is going to be “raw, griddy, and epic!” I’m excited to see what she has in store!

...After class, I called my little sis and said that Hayley Reinhart was in my class. My sis was so excited! She wanted Hayley to win that year because Hayley sang “I Who Have Nothing” and it was the best performance she ever seen on Idol. So I looked it up on Youtube, and it was amazing! Haley Reinhart is a wonderful singer! I don’t watch American idol and I can admit that I’ve never heard of this beautiful girl but I looked up some of her videos and she is amazing! I love her jazzy like voice! I don’t know much about American Idol but I do know that millions of people audition and there are a lot of great voices and to be placed third is really a huge accomplishment. Haley has a great personality and if she keeps up what she’s doing she can really get big one day. She’s come further than most people her age and hasn’t given up and I respect her for that. The fact that she isn’t doing it for the money is rare these days. Most artists are coming out with songs that have no meaning what so ever but they know it will sell well. I want to hear more of her music because she isn’t like the rest and she is such a sweet girl. I also really like the fact that she took the stage with her parents. She performed with them in a band called “Midnight.” She doesn’t have a specific genre and I’m sure with a voice like hers she could pull of anything.

Our guest this week was singer and songwriter Haley Reinhart. She seems like a real down to earth person that hasn’t been tainted by Hollywood. I have to admit I had no idea who Ms. Reinhart was before this interview. It was a pleasure to have a singer/artist on the interview floor for once. I was also impressed to find out Ms. Reinhart was the 3rd place winner of the 10th season of American Idol. She was straight with us and told us it’s not like you see on television. It takes work, dedication and patience. I also like the fact that she was so humble. “Life changes dramatically after being on tv. You have to learn to keep your morals and values.” She also told us that she wanted to win 3rd place cause she could have more creative freedom. She wanted time to write and create her own songs and not just be a pop robot. I think that’s really smart of her to realize that at a young age. She then went on to talk about the entertainment business and how you should always trust your gut. “Always know what’s going on with the budget.” She also told us to keep those that want to see you succeed close and never feel intimidated by your accountants. **I feel like Ms. Reinhart should start focusing more on social media because it does get your name out there. Make it easy for people to find samples of your songs and they will most likely share it with others.

**For not knowing anything about Haley, pre-interview, this commenter sure zoned into the Social Media aspect of Haley's process, quickly in that last comment

I was able to see Ms. Reinhart sing with Professor Irvin and NOJO at their House of Blues show. I was stunned to hear how powerful her voice sounds. Like I said earlier I had no idea who she was because I don’t watch American Idol. She was quite spectacular on stage not to mention her beautiful dress and makeup. Cara, I’m glad you were able to get a photo with her and I hope your sister was super jealous! I also agree with what Antonia said, Ms. Reinhart has the right personality and will make it big in the industry if she stays her course. It was a pleasure see her perform and will be looking out for her name if she decides to tour our city.

Getting to sit in a room with a famous singer and hear them speak might be a big thing for most people, but listening to Ms. Reinhart was not what I would’ve expected. She was absolutely no different than any of my friends. She seemed like the kind of girl who used to be a shy quiet high schooler and took a shot at singing and ended up being awesome. It is a one in a 100 million shot at being that successful in her life at such a young age. Its cool seeing someone famous and successful conduct themselves as humbly as she does. I’m sure Hollywood has had its effects on Ms. Reinhart, but she masks the stress and tough decisions behind a kind friendly smile and soft voice. I find it awesome she is a song writer. I often struggle to write a rhyme or poem so i definitely respect the level of skill she has to not only be a performer, but also a writer. She is also a smart business woman. I never would have thought that coming in third on american idol would be great for someones’s career, but i see how first and second place may have put her into a contract that would limit her artistic freedoms, assuming it was a pre-written contract and she would basically belong to some record label. She is a smart, beautiful, and talented individual and i hope to see her succeed even further in the future.

In case you haven't looked it up, this was a cover of Nirvana's cover of a David Bowie song, the most memorable performance of which was on Nirvana's MTV Unplugged.

As kind of a reaction to the heavily amplified music of the time, MTV introduced a show that highlighted usually amped performance to perform acoustically in an intimate setting. It was Nirvana's Unplugged that had such an impact that other bands such as KISS would join in on the "Unplugged" bandwagon (to much lesser effect )

Among all the Unplugged episodes that followed, Nirvana's would stand the test of time, being one of the best of the "Unplugged" series, if not THE best

Im so excited to be writing about Haley Reinhart! I didnt know too much about her except that SHE ROCKS! Her music is amazing and seems like such a down to earth person. I admire the fact that she is a young woman that had a dream and actually followed through with it and keeping it up. She is a true inspiration to young women like myself. Her music is awesome too!

Unfortunately, I was not in class to hear Ms. Reinhart speak. Fortunately, she is famous and I can look her up and listen to her sing. She has an absolutely amazing voice. I looked up her American Idol performances and how she didn’t win, which amazes me, and she blew me away with her voice. She is a very pretty woman. After reading everyone else’s blogs about her I definitely regret missing class that day.

OK, here’s the truth: I did not enjoy this interview. I do not watch American Idol either. I had never heard the girl’s name mentioned before. I really really wish that Prof. Mayfield would have asked different questions instead of focusing on her experience on American Idol. I understand that he assumed we would be very curious and interested in hearing about the process and what it’s really like for the contestants. Sure, go ahead; tell us a bit about it. Give us a “backstage scoop” if you will… but then tell us more about your musical inspirations and aspirations. Who is Hailey Reinhart? Why does she sing? What would she change about all this? Does she plan to do this forever? How famous is she planning to become? I don’t know… There are a million things more interesting than American Idol. I am sure there is MUCH more to this person than her appearance on that show.

That being said, Hailey is the sweetest! I must admit I have listened to her songs a couple of times. I do not usually listen to music like hers, but I admire and enjoy her voice. Her next album is something to look forward to, though. She said she would be experimenting with different, more soultry sounds. Like a couple of others, I was also at the House of Blues watching her sing with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. Her voice is delightful. I know I pretty much said that already, but I will say it a third time if I have to. She is a beautiful person on the inside and outside. Hailey has a glamorous yet cute way about her… even when she is performing! Don’t get me wrong, the girl can bring it on stage, but she has the whole “adorable diva” thing down.

Having Hailey at our class was refreshing. She was completely different from every single other guest we had this semester. I wish we could have done more with that.

She is such a power house! Every guest has given valuable insight into the working world, but all of the guests so far are established in their careers and it was refreshing to be able to listen to someone who is in the beginning of their career, like Haley. She gave great insight into how to maneuver the world as a young adult. She is authentic and surrounds herself with authentic people; it seems that’s the only way she’s survived in the cut throat music industry. I also enjoyed that she emphasized that “you know your worth. You can turn down that million dollar contract if you don’t want it.”

I agree with Jade to a certain degree, I definitely have no intention of auditioning for American Idol, so I wasn’t interested in the auditioning process, but I was interested to know how the show actually worked. I’ve never watched American Idol regularly, even at the peak of its popularity, but I am interested in the way reality television works. She got to have such a unique experience, few people in the world have that kind of opportunity so it was interesting to hear what she had to say. However, I definitely found her stories about her struggles as an artist and her drive to continue to be an authentic person more interesting. Now whenever I see a new single released by a popular artist, I think of Haley’s comment that those artists aren’t really in the industry for the long haul; they just want the quick buck. She said, “Those that release a full body of work, those will be the ones that stick around.” I had never really thought about the music industry like that before, but she’s right. I forget about the singles released by pop idols and keep going back to the bands that tell full stories. It’s important for us to do the things that fulfill us and sent good vibes out into the universe.

...After spending the time with her I wanted to both find out more and to listen to as much of her music as possible.

I hope her star continues to brighten, she continues to be the positive role model she is and she continues to share encouragement and energy for those coming up behind her.

My first impression of Haley was “wow, she’s so pretty and put together.” She naturally has this shine to her with the way she carries herself. It was really hard to look at her too long, I thought I was going to go blind.
To my surprise she was actually a very sweet, modest and talented girl. Most of the interview was spent with her talking about the technical ins and outs of American Idol. How she was rejected the first time she auditioned and then by the next season she made it all the way to the finalists.
That really made me think because at first they didn’t think she was good enough for the show but she persevered past all the other contestants to the very end.
What was really remarkable to me was the fact that she was aiming for 3rd place. That really stopped me in my tracks because I thought you had to be ruthlessly ambitious to make it far in American Idol. I figured most of the contestants had tunnel vision for the top when people audition so for Haley to say she was happy and expected to get 3rd place was really surprising to me.
Finally, Haley is a remarkably humble young woman who has competed with the best and made it to the top. She has a lot to be proud of but doesn’t come off as narcissistic at all. I wasn’t even expecting to like her but by the end of the interview I was inspired by her. Just goes to show that not all people get famous and let it go to their heads.
