5 dead, 45 injured in stage collapse at Indiana state fair

Ashley Courtney, junior in the (Purdue) College of Liberal Arts, said she was walking away from the stage area when she heard a scream, turned around, and saw the stage fall.

"It happened all at once," she said. "It was definitely a freak accident."

Courtney and her friends had been waiting for Sugarland to go on stage when concert officials announced the band was going to hold off its performance. Officials were concerned about the high gusts of wind and were giving the audience instructions on how to handle the weather.

"Basically, they were giving us an exit plan," Courtney said.

No more than two minutes after that announcement, the stage fell.
