Now that I think about it, the Jungle Book came to my mind because Haley was just returning to her seat having just finished a shot, she was singing "ooh ooh ooh, I wanna be like you ooh ooh" from the Jungle Book

As for Jacob.. yes, seeing Casy Jacob and Taylor perform live in Oakland in december I was impressed with all of their spirit. Jacob did seem to have particular connection to the crowd and glow to him even if I don't recall him saying more than a few words up on stage.

He's got what they call a "stage presence" I think.. something hard to define and not the same thing necessarily as being glib or articulate (and he might be both of those too).. it's more about just a comfort and command of the stage and an uncanny way of making people comfortable looking at them.

This is also something known in Western mime, and mime Lindsey Kemp passed something of the kind on to no less than David Bowie. Also this: keep a sense of stillness in your spine.

I know this requires a lot of imagination and visualization, and it is easier to explain and teach in person than it is to describe. But I have absolutely seen it work.

In the brief time that I had to speak with Jacob, I did mention how much I enjoyed their Flintstones rendition, Jacob replied "cartoons are good." I wish I had thought to ask if they've ever considered doing something similar with the Yogi Bear theme song. I think that would lend itself to a jazz version to a similar degree that the Flintstones theme does.

Tom, thanks for finding that description of "stage presence." Actually, I think that all three have stage presence, although in very different ways. Taylor has a focus (perhaps that's the "zen-like quality" that I mentioned earlier) that was very clear, from the moment he set foot onstage with his solo on Never Knew ... Of the three of them, if someone might fade in the background (and, perhaps, not care), it might be Taylor -- yet he doesn't.

Casey, of course, has a "stage presence" personality that is close to, but not quite, larger than life -- even though I think he's toned it down considerably, particularly since his AI days. Haley has likely had some influence there, but I think Taylor, in his quiet, focused (zen-like) way has, as well. And -- (this just in[to my brain]) perhaps Casey, in viewing what Monika Lightfoot has produced, may have realized that her introspective approach can be extremely effective. (That may be nothing but sheer speculation on my part, but Casey is a really smart guy. And thus, such stuff would't necessarily be lost on him.)

And then there is Jacob. He just does whatever he's expected to do, be it playing a horn, providing percussion (and demonstrating a lot of coordination in the process), singing back up harmony (usually while displaying the above mentioned coordination), or just a little piano work, but always with a sly smile (unless said smile might impair his tone when playing) and with that added spark or "glow," as you described it, Tom. The guy's a star in the making.

I hope that this trio can and will forge a lasting musical relationship. For those who have seen them perform together, know that you've witnessed something really, really special.

perhaps Casey, in viewing what Monika Lightfoot has produced, may have realized that her introspective approach can be extremely effective. (That may be nothing but sheer speculation on my part, but Casey is a really smart guy. And thus, such stuff would't necessarily be lost on him.)

I actually had a talk (text?) with Monika last night and have developed a budding friendship with her. Turns out, I was wrong to consider her a "Casey fan" just because she has so many of his videos on her channel. She is also, definitely a Haley fan too. She could not say enough good things about Haley... Classy, poise of a Star, professional, it's in her bones, flows through her veins... are just a few ways Monika has described her interaction with Haley.

Then we discussed, Casey and his 'rough edges' but they, Haley and Casey, complement each other in such an organic, perfect way, Monika put it perfectly which made me laugh...

While I'd agree with that assessment, that wasn't exactly what I was speaking of, which was, while I don't know who or what or why, Casey isn't quite as literally "in your face" as he used to be.

Thanks for your thoughts MAE and what you say makes sense. They all seem to be quite talented and they have a really nice synergy together. It seems that they have played a lot of community theaters together as opposed to small clubs where lots of alcohol flows. I wonder if their style also reflects their development as a trio in venues that are inherently less rambunctious than the bar seen.

Casey has always had different sides to his stage persona. On Idol he did Nature Boy and later, Fat Bottomed Girls with Jack Black.

I would agree that Casey has always had sort of a duel nature to him on stage. He's got his "Nature Boy" side and he's got his "Jack Black" side. I think it depends on what he's trying to do on stage...show off his musicality or show off his personality. (And I'd imagine, different times call for a different presence.)

I think, sometimes on Idol..he'd mash the two up when it was inappropriate. (Harder to Breathe.) And it's probably just maturity and growth on his part.
