The other guy, "Boo" Mitchell, is a producer who inherited a storied studio in Memphis from his father. He produced Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk" there.

Mitchell grew up surrounded by popular recording artists like KC & The Sunshine Band, The Jacksons, the Doobie Brothers and working with his father and Hi Records, often at Royal Studios.

That Melissa Etheridge album that John Burk produced was created there.

I know that I’m in the vast majority when I say that MEmphis Rock and Soul is a fantastic album. The fact that you were recording at Royal Studios in Memphis with Willie Mitchell’s son, Boo, on the studio’s original board – it doesn’t get more authentic than that.

That was the whole plan. That’s why when I really made up my mind to do this, I said I’ve got to do it as authentically as I possibly can. I had to really get in there and submerge myself into it. And when I went down and met with them beforehand – met Boo and saw Royal Studios and the musicians – I was like, “Oh, I’m so in. This is it.” And it was such a blast.

John Burk co-produced the 2005 Grammy winner for Album of the Year, Genius Loves Company (Ray Charles). It won a total of eight awards.

The album was produced by Concord A&R man, John Burk, who approached Charles with the concept of a duets album for a collaboration of Concord Records and Hear Music, the record label owned by the coffee chain Starbucks.[3] It served as the first original non-compilation release by Hear Music,[3] as well as one of Ray Charles' most commercially successful albums. On February 2, 2005, Genius Loves Company was certified triple-platinum in sales by the Recording Industry Association of America following sales of over three million copies in the United States.[4] On February 13, 2005, the album was awarded eight Grammy Awards including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. The cover featured an iconic image by photographer Norman Seeff. The Album of the Year award was presented to coproducer John Burk, who accepted on behalf of himself and coproducer Phil Ramone. (Ramone could not make the trip to Los Angeles for the Grammy ceremony.)

...Burk says the production of “Genius Love Company” was more collaborative than the credits indicate -- Ramone gets sole credit on five of the dozen tracks -- and the two were in the control room when Elton John and Charles recorded “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word.” That recording, Burk notes, was the one that let everyone know the project was something special.

“It was the last session we did together,” Burk says, noting that Charles' illness forced them to record the band ahead of time, instead of live as they had on the other tracks. “Elton came in early and was hanging out, and Ray came in and we worked out a few details.

“The control room was packed -- half the record company was in the control room -- and once Ray finished his take it was silent. Everyone was choked up.”

Charles left the studio after about 90 minutes; John was mixing his album “Peachtree Road” in another studio and asked Burk and Ramone to burn him a CD of the studio banter. When John returned to the studio, Burk and Ramone asked John if he wanted to hear the rough mix while they were burning the CD requested.

“Half way through the song Elton turns around and tears are running down his face and he tells Phil 'this is one of the most impactful moments of my recording career',” Burk remembers. “We knew we had something special at that moment and that was one of Phil's gifts. One of the most important things for him was the belief that if you can capture emotion and the human experience behind a song, it takes music to level of communication. He was great at knowing when that was happening.”

In the first production (that you served as the producer), did you fit into the role pretty seamlessly?

Of all the good advice that John was giving me, one of the better things he said was, “You know, if you find a good studio, a good engineer, a good mixer, and assuming the musicianship is there, you’re good already. The only thing you can do from there is ruin it.” So as long as you don’t try to affect things too much, it should be fine. For some reason that stuck with me. When I produce I’m really just helping the artist get the best out of themselves.

One thing..... Since it appears production is underway, or over (?) on HR3, it just seems unusual that she did not preview the new HR3 songs in front of audiences.

Several of the songs on "Better" had been played many times in live settings before the CD release. But, maybe there just was not time to do so....? Or, maybe there will be one or more covers, including "Can't Find My Way Home" which have already been road tested?

Everything about HR3 has been different from previous albums. Didn't she say her goal was to have it ready to support for the Euro tour? Seems in line to do that. I expect a few reveals once we get into March.

I had a thought that maybe they worked on more songs than they will have on the album, so they haven't fully realised the shape or form yet and will decide after they can step back and take a look. (I know that's very unlikely as studio time/labour = money, but as of yet, we have no idea of the nature of this arrangement...perhaps she has signed w/ someone that will allow her that flexibility.....as of now, anything is possible ;P )

Also, the Euro tour is still 3 months away, not out of the question to start hearing her perform new songs in March and April
