Haley's Idol Journey

Haley's Idol Journey
Note from Miguel: I've re-titled Fover's thorough "Memories" post to "Haley's Idol Journey" and rolled other posts about the journey related to the videos by Hiphopgamer and Tusk into it.

Had to share this with all you other fans before we forget the them. Feel free to add to it or correct any erroneous statements:

1. Haley’s Journey video made by Hiphopgamer26 took time and patience to produce. It is a great look into Haley’s Idol journey. Many of my notes were taken directly from the video. Those who have not downloaded it should do so while it is still available. Being a curious sort, I wondered if any other contestants had one. After an exhaustive search, I was not able to find a comparable video made for any other contestant in Idol history.

2. Haley’s Idol journey took 2 diverse routes, “Haley (Fodder) Reinhart” and “Haley (Contender) Reinhart”. To steal a line from Randy, “I didn’t like the beginning, but I loved the ending”.

• “Haley (Fodder) Reinhart had a great voice, but was awkward on stage and unsure of how to coordinate her body movements with her vocals. She was completely overshadowed by the other female singers, seemed to be going in several different directions musically and had her name stamped on one of the bottom 3 stools. Absolutely no one believed she was a serious contender, or that she was there as anything else but fodder for entertainment value.

• Although some may argue that Haley’s breakout performance was “Bennie and the Jets”, Top 9 week was the real game-changer. It was as if someone snapped their fingers and poof… Haley became a serious threat. She performed “Piece of My Heart” flawlessly. It had the studio audience bouncing in their seats and it showed America the type of performer that Haley could be. This confident, professional Haley is the one you see throughout the rest of the season. She earns pimp spots in group songs and nails her duets with Casey, Lauren and Tony Bennett. Although the judges did not like some song choices, her performances are concert quality every week; receiving 5 standing ovations over the final 8 weeks. She also receives serious praise from mentors Will I Am, Sheryl Crow, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Jimmy Iovine during this time.

3. Haley is the only contestant ever to reach the top 3 after spending 4 weeks in the bottom 3 (6 times if you also consider she made the Hollywood cut “by the skin of her teeth”, and was the last girl chosen for the top 10).

4. While several contestants have received standing ovations over the years. Very, very few have received more than one over the course of a season. Even fewer (if any) have received more than two in a season. None have ever received one in two consecutive weeks. Haley did better. She was the only contestant in Idol history to receive 5 over the course of a season (“House of the Rising Sun”,” I Who Have Nothing”, “What Is and What Should Never Be”, “Moanin” and “Steppin Out With My Baby”). The last 2 were non-judged duet performances. Many have opined that her “Piece of My Heart” performance should have received one as well. Haley is also the only contestant in Idol history to receive standing ovations for judged performances in 3 consecutive weeks (Top 5 - “House of the Rising Sun”, Top 4 - “I Who Have Nothing”, and Top 3 - “What Is and What Should Never Be”).

5. Lady Gaga let Haley sing an unreleased song “You and I”. Haley did a great cover of it. Gaga later released the song on an album with significant changes. Hmmm, I wonder why?

6. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page contacted Idol producers and offered Reinhart the opportunity to sing a Led Zeppelin song for Top 3 week. It was the first time they had ever done that for anyone. Haley sang “What Is and What Should Never Be” and received a standing ovation, even after tripping on a step and falling during the performance.

7. Haley was the first contestant ever to have a parent accompany her on stage when her father played lead guitar in “What Is and What Should Never Be”.

8. Haley covered songs previously recorded by Alicia Keys, Leanne Rimes, Whitney Houston, The Beatles, Elton John, Janis Joplin, Blondie, Art Blakely, Adele, Carol King, Lady Gaga, The Animals, Michael Jackson, Shirley Bassey, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks and Alanis Morsette. About the only genre she didn’t cover was Rap.

9. Haley sang a duet with Tony Bennett, sang backup to Beyonce and Stevie Wonder, was tutored by Will I Am, Sheryl Crow, Beyonce and Lady Gaga, met Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Stephen Tyler and a host of other personalities, appeared on a syndicated morning show, and toured the US, Canada and Philippines; all within 7 months of singing in a jam band on weekends for a few dollars a song. Whew!

10. Three of Haley’s performances are considered to be among the best ever on Idol (House of the Rising Sun”, “I Who Have Nothing” and “Moanin”).

11. An Internet source reported: “Fox Research reported that the single most played back minute on American Idol Season 10 was her performance of “I Who Have Nothing.” She performed this Shirley Bassey track during top four week, and needless to say, her interpretation was intriguing and vocally stunning. Just more evidence, Haley is the true American Idol.” http://jasonlscott.com/2011/05/31/americ...te-on-dvr/

12. Haley made what may be the most unforgettable sound bite in Idol history when, during her performance of “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight”, she inadvertently smeared lipstick all over her cheek and chin while parading around the judges table. When she came full circle and tossed a sultry look at the camera, she was in full smear. Ryan Seacrest interrupted the judges’ critiques to rub the red lipstick off her face, when Haley said. "I'm kissing the mic here. This is my first red lipstick massacre." The line was quickly picked up by the media, and led to a spoof piece (parody) on her. http://www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?h...e=s4i93323

13. Ryan Seacrest routinely had pre-performance background story chats with top contestants. Haley was the only contestant without one going into Top 5 week, when Ryan chatted with her before she sang “You and I”. Scotty had 3, Lauren 2, Haley 0, James 3, Jacob 2. Hmmm, where are those conspiracy theorists?

14. Haley sang 3 songs on Top 3 Night, “What Is and What Should Never Be”, “Rhiannon” and “You Oughta Know”. Because it was Homecoming Week for the contestants, Haley said she was not able to learn the words to the last 2 songs until the night before singing them.

15. Haley mentioned in an interview that, because of the busy schedule, she only got to spend about 2 hours in the studio recording her songs for iTunes. (Of course I think they all sound great, but just think how good they would have sounded if she had more time to practice before making a final cut).

16. Six contestants recorded songs for iTunes. Haley recorded 14 songs in total. Actual sales numbers of those songs were not released, but as of 10/12/2011, 10 of the top 13 are Haley’s.

17. As reported in American Gossip back on May 30, 2011: “It is becoming increasingly clear that we have only seen a tease view of what this girl can do. And she is marketable . . . As I write this; she has FIVE of the top 200 most downloaded songs on itunes! That's more than ALL other Season 10 contestants combined! And with no marketing effort. She is tied with Katy Perry and Adele! Only Lady GAGA and the Glee Cast have more!
In addition, her YouTube videos have had over 7 million views!”

18. Haley is the only season 10 contestant to eclipse 1 million YouTube views on multiple performance videos. Her “Rolling in the Deep” performance had over 2 million views, and “House of the Rising Sun", "Bennie and the Jets" and "I Who Have Nothing” each had more than 1 million views.

19. When Jerry Leiber of Leiber & Stoller passed away recently, an article appeared in Entertainment Online titled: “Jerry Leiber Dead at 78: Five Songs That Made Him a Music Legend”. Videos of artists singing those songs were included in the article. They listed: Elvis singing “Jailhouse Rock”, John Lennon singing “Stand by Me”, The Dixie Cups singing “Chapel of Love”, Peggy Lee singing “I’m a Woman”, and Haley Reinhart singing “I Who Have Nothing”. That’s quite a group to be listed among. http://www.eonline.com/news/jerry_leiber...ade/259610

20. When Haley was on tour in Milwaukee, she flew to Chicago for a scheduled meet with Paul McCartney who was performing there, leading to speculation that Paul and Haley may collaborate on a future project. Unfortunately, bad weather prevented her plane from landing and the meeting did not take place.

21. It is rumored that Haley signed the biggest recording contract in Idol history. That is not confirmed, but her initial net worth, based primarily on her recording contract, is estimated to be around $1.5 Million, which is $300,000 greater than winner Scotty McCreery’s initial net worth of $1.2 Million. Lauren Alaina, who placed 2nd does not have a reported net worth, which is an indication that it is probably under $500,000. http://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest...net-worth/

22. Each year, The Huffington Post lists young artists on the rise. Haley was the only Idol contestant to make this list. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/16..._Reinhart_

23. Michael Slezak, a respected critic for TVLine did an entertaining and informative 5-part interview with Haley that is worth watching. http://www.tvline.com/2011/06/idoloonies...interview/ Slezak picked Haley as TVLine's favorite Season 10 contestant and thanked her for "kicking ass" and being "a risk-taker and awesome". In less than a week, the article became the most commented on article on the website and eventually logged over 3,000 comments.

24. Haley received notable musician and celebrity support from many personalities including: Robert Plant, Lady Gaga, Jimmy Page, Adam Lambert, Tom Hanks, Blake Lewis, Melinda Doolittle, Carly Hennessy, Kris Allen, Kelly Clarkson, Ellen DeGeneres, Sheryl Crow, Beyonce, Will I Am, Michael Slezak and others.

25. Haley received signs of respect from some unexpected people. Watch the backup singer in Haley’s “Rolling in the Deep” performance as she shakes her head in admiration of Haley’s performance. Also, in the recording studio clip for that same week, Jim Jonsin, producer for Rock Mafia, looks into the camera, points at Haley, and says “she’s a badass”. And, on the night Haley was voted off, the band continued to play on long after she finished singing her swan song. A music insider explained it was done as a mark of respect to Haley. I don’t recall that being done for any other contestant.

26. Haley’s fan base is perhaps more diverse than any other Idol contestant. Fans aged from the teens to 60+ and lovers of several genres of music that include jazz, classic rock, pop and country have jumped on Haley’s Soul Train. Additionally, based on comments made on various fan sites, many of her fans are extremely knowledgeable of music and may be associated with the music and recording industries. Haley also has a large international following.

27. The clothiers who provided outfits for American Idol and the Idol wardrobe department either loved Haley or she had more fashion sense than any contestant in Idol history because she was outfitted and accessorized perfectly for each and every performance. It became a favorite topic on fan sites every week.

Notable Quotable Notes:

• Haley in Hollywood: “I’m just hoping for the best you know, but Que Sara, like, whatever will be will be, so just gotta go with the flow.”

• Music producers, Rock Mafia, before “Blue”: “Mostly when we make a classic record, it’s a step down from the nostalgia of what it was. I think you (Haley) can actually reinvent it.”

• Mentor Jimmy Iovine on “Blue”: “That was incredible, most people I know couldn’t do that”

• Jennifer Lopez after “Blue”: “You, honestly, more than anyone else in this competition, do things with your voice that are so diverse.”

• Jennifer before “Blue”: “Haley has a very sexy quality about her when she’s up there. She sings in a very sensual way. She brings that every time she’s up there.”

• Haley during critique on “I’m Your Baby”: “It’s my first red lipstick massacre.”

• Haley before “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me”: “A huge goal this week is to, ya, not be in the bottom three this time.”

• Jennifer after “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me”: “You have that effortless control in your voice. You can do anything with your voice, probably more than anyone in this competition. It goes wherever you want it to go. Wherever you’re thinking, that’s where it goes. And, honestly, I think you may have the most soulful voice than anybody in the competition.”

• Haley before “Bennie and the Jets”: “Jimmy really likes that Hardcore Bangage on the piano, which I’m totally into, I want it to be rockin!”

• Mentor ‘Will I Am’ before “Piece of My Heart”: “You sound like an artist not a singer… You sound like the real deal.”

• Jennifer after “Piece of My Heart”: “WOW, OK, ok, we’re off to a bit of a strong start here! This is starting to feel like a real fight! You know what you’re showing everybody is that you are a contender! They need to be careful with Haley! You’re coming on strong! You’ve got that stuff! You keep going like that; you’re going to be around for a minute! For a minute!”

• Haley before “Call Me”: “I feel I am like, for sure, growing as an artist. I don’t know how anybody here can say they are not. The fast pace work that we are doing and the experience of meeting all these producers; there’s no way I can ever say I am not growing in a tremendous way.”

• Randy after “Moanin”: “YO! YO! Haley baby, that’s what’s up… That’s how you do it! YO! We’re sitting here saying where was all of that? That’s what we love! Oh my God!”

• Jennifer after “Moanin”: It sounds like they’ve been doing that all their lives. It’s so crazy!

• Studio sound tech whispering into the camera before “Rolling in the Deep”: “She’s a badass.”

• Randy after “Rolling in the Deep”: “Adele is an amazing artist, I think she’s an amazing singer and I think you have that amazing thing in you as a singer as well.”

• Stephen Tyler after “Beautiful”: “I just saw God, I heard God in your voice.”

• Randy explains his critique of “Beautiful” to Ryan: “When I heard her sing; it brought tears to my eyes… She’s got it going on, she’s got a beautiful voice, there’s not a thing about it that’s not God-like.”

• Jennifer after “Beautiful”: “You have one of the best voices in this competition.”

• Jimmy after “Beautiful”: “I fully agree with Jennifer that Haley has one of the best voices on this stage!”

• Jimmy before “You and I”: “What you are about to see Haley sing this week is a powerful song that not everyone’s going to be familiar with; that she just laces, and shows you just where she could go. She’s got it, and taking on this song is just another way of showing she’s got it.”

• Mentor Sheryl Crow before “You and I”: “I think her doing Lady Gaga; a song that has not even been released yet is a Super Bowl choice.”

• Jimmy before “House of the Rising Sun”: “If Haley was a teenager in the 60’s and recording, she would have recorded House of the Rising Sun. It’s straight out of her book.”

• Sheryl Crow before “House of the Rising Sun”: “I think you are going to be shocked when you hear her sing it, she’s interpreting it in a way I’ve never heard and I think you are going to love it.”

• Randy after “House of the Rising Sun”: “YO! The award tonight for the best performance of the night goes to Haley”! YO! Girl! You’ve grown by leaps and bounds on this show. I’m like; I remember when you just started with us. You like blossomed! You’re so good now! That was amazing!”

• Stephen after “House of the Rising Sun”: “Sweet and sour, raspy. I can really relate to that, and that really, that really sells a song and I think you sold everybody tonight, Oh Ya.”

• Jennifer after “House of the Rising Sun”: “I don’t know, I don’t know if you came out a little angry at us from before, whatever that little emotion was in the beginning like I don’t care, I’m going to sing my butt off right now; that song has never been sang like that before! Great job!”

• Jimmy after “You and I” and “House of the Rising Sun”: “In my opinion, Haley was running 4th or 5th. I felt she had to do something dangerous, and risky.” “Haley showed no fear in the face of being severely criticized; she came forward like a lioness in the “House of the Rising Sun”! No question in my mind, on all points, Haley gets a 10! She won the night! If Haley’s confidence continues, she’s a lock for the finale!”

• Mentor Lady Gaga before “I, Who Have Nothing”: “It’s perfect. It’s amazing.” “You’re going to kick so much ass, you little pony.”

• Haley before “I, Who Have Nothing”: “I, Who Have Nothing” is a very dramatic song. It has the potential of being a really special moment for me, and it has to be because it’s for top 3, and it’s a big deal.”

• Jennifer after “I, Who Have Nothing”: “Haley! Haley, Haley! This is why we can’t take it easy on you, baby! Look what you’re capable of! Look what you’re capable of! We will never take it easy on you because you are that amazing! Look what you’re capable of baby. Come On! That was Amazing! One of the best performances of the year, here!” “That’s what it has to be; all the emotion and passion! I can’t stop talking!”

• Randy after “I, Who Have Nothing”: “YO! What’s important is everyone needs a moment tonight. So, we were hard on you before, but listen, what you did was, YO, you were mad at, probably got mad at us back there, the judges whatever. YO! But, YO! You just had a moment here, which put you in it to win it! YO, Haley, This is what’s going down! This is what you have to do and you did it! That was amazing! One of your best vocals ever!”

• Stephen after “I, Who Have Nothing”: “Yah, and I always knew it. This was a classic moment with classic Haley; you just Reinharted yourself into the middle of next week! That was beautiful!”

• Mentor Beyonce before “What is and What Should Never Be”: “It was a very interesting song choice. It just shows her gut; her “bleep”, her strength and her fearlessness. She is a risk-taker because she didn’t pick a pop song or something everyone knows. She has convictions; she makes you believe in what she believes in, which is a huge part of being a superstar.” “I think Haley is a rock star. Haley has a presence, even when she’s not singing. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone like her.” “You’re tone is so warm and your raspiness is so natural; not forced. You’re incredible.”

• Randy after “What is and What Should Never Be”: “This girl is slaying it! She’s fearless. You chose a song that’s not for the weak at heart. I mean, this is Zeppelin dude. This is like crazy vocals, got your father on stage, this was one of your best performances ever! YO, crazy, crazy! Haley’s in it to win it!”

• Jennifer after “What is and What Should Never Be”: “Listen, everyone’s fallen on stage. I’ve fallen on stage; Beyonce’s fallen on stage… What happens is you keep going! You keep going! That’s a sign of a professional! That’s a sign of someone who knows what they’re doing up there! These people deserve more than that and you gave it to them!”

• Stephen after “What is and What Should Never Be”: “So Scotty sang it like he meant it; Lauren had too much fun; but she got to put her freak on, and that’s what people in America have not seen yet!”

• Jennifer after “You Oughta Know”: “It was a really good job; like I said, the choruses, you really, there’s nobody who can match you there, you know what I mean as far as how high you can go and how much power you can put behind your growl and everything.”

• Tony Bennett’s post Idol interview: “Watching this show year in and year out, especially this year, a lot of singers sing a little too… they end up screaming instead of singing. This girl (Haley) knows how to sing.”

• Carly Hennessy in Michael Slezak’s Idoloonies: “She has this really dreamy, creamy place in her voice that just makes me melt.”

• Casey Abrams in US Weekly Interview: “Her voice is incredible. The tone of her voice is like nothing I've ever, ever heard before. Never ever. I wish you knew how serious I was about this. Like, it's never going to be replicated, and it's never been done before. I mean, I think her heart's in jazz, jazzy rock. That Adele song was perfect and I thought "Moanin'" was amazing.”

• Lauren Alaina backstage after Randy’s scathing critique of Earth Song: “I’m sorry guys (looking directly at Scotty and James), Haley has the best voice on this show and she gets the most criticism.”

• Haley Reinhart’s recorded “look back” message after she was voted off: “This is the journey that I want to take. Singing is indescribable. It is the only thing that I picture myself doing for the rest of my life.”

• Haley Reinhart before singing her Swan song: “Man ole man, this is the biggest, biggest platform any girl… anybody can ask for, and I rocked it out, and I had a blast, and it’s only the beginning. I thank you guys all so very much.”

• Haley Reinhart after singing her Swan song: “Ya baby, you’ll be seeing me! This ain’t the end of this, this ain’t the end of this thing… shindig! See ya later!”
