Haley Reinhart is a little spitfire; a pistol
Quote:This interview confirmed for me why JLo didn’t like Haley: Haley is just too sure of herself; she knows who she is, sees herself as equal and does not do obsequious.

JLo is into deference, not equality!

They knew she had cried after being crushed during her Season Nine audition and they tried to reduce her to tears on live television before a national audience. They were so transparently unbalanced in how they dished out the criticism that it made it easier for her to cope with it.

Quote:She’s kind of an odd thing, isn’t she? In a wonderful way, of course, but she’s not your typical 20 year-old. I’ve seen enough of her interviews to know how sweet she is, but her carefree, yet headstrong vibe can be misinterpreted a lot of people because she’s not predictable.

Comment by Posey – June 17, 2011 12:40 PM PDT

She is quite an “odd thing,” I agree. She seems to me like someone who is very sensitive/high strung on the inside, but who at the same time is capable of such a high degree of emotional control that we only ever see the smiling, laughing Haley (or the angry Haley…which she even said she “should have kept to herself” more.) And it wasn’t to be fake; she just seemed like she thought it was better and more genuine to show the world her chilled, optimistic mindset than to allow other people to control her via her emotions. It’s almost like a quiet stubbornness.

I think this is what some people misinterpret as “bitchiness.” But those of us capable of assessing character beyond such trite shallownesses were able to see that this stubborn, willful quality, in combination with her obvious affability, is actually what makes her an endearing character.

Comment by Doo doo butter – June 17, 2011 01:07 PM PDT

Quote:That optimistic mindset is a key part of her. She’s talked a whole lot about faith in good things happening, faith that things will work out for the best. That’s remarkable to me because I’m different, but I can really admire that. People saying that her surprise at being eliminated means she felt “entitled” or bitchy or whatever is just way off-base. She probably was surprised, but it’s because she’s an optimist and it’s like she doesn’t even mull on the alternatives until it happens.
She’s been called an old soul, which I think applies both musically and characteristically. I find her fascinating in both regards.

Comment by Posey – June 17, 2011 02:49 PM PDT

@Posey – thanks for clarifying where that “entitled” comment came from. And I completely agree about it being off-based. As expected as it is, I’m still sometimes shocked by the level of negative judgment that gets flung about based on one moment’s facial expression, etc. I would say, “of course she looked surprised.” I can’t imagine getting to that point in a competition that’s this over-the-top without committing to the idea that you could go all the way. You’re on a huge and fast moving train, and for it to take a minute to process that you just fell off makes all kinds of sense to me.

Comment by JordanH – June 18, 2011 12:40 AM PDT

Quote:Yep – she doesn’t come off as being 20 years old at all. She definitely has an “odd” style about her – but, as you said, a good kind of odd. I really wonder what her closest friends would say about her – especially the ones who are around the same age.

Comment by Tom K – June 17, 2011 02:28 PM PDT

I love Haley’s outlook on life...This (Idoloonies) interview really emphasized Haley’s heightened sense of self-awareness and humility. It’s a shame that most people twisted her confidence and security with herself into something shameful and arrogant; but that is because most of these people aren’t secure enough in themselves to admire it in others. I think Jell-O and Randy might have been experiencing this feeling towards the end of the season because they could sense that Haley wasn’t responding to their feedback like an eager-to-please puppy.

Comment by Jasmine – June 17, 2011 01:19 PM PDT

Quote:Agreed. I really admire her attitude towards everything and it kills me when people misinterpret her in the worst way, when she’s really just a cool chick with an awareness of what’s going on, as you said. People like their Idol contestants to behave and react in predictable ways, and someone like Haley can really throw them for a loop.

Comment by Liz – June 17, 2011 03:00 PM PDT

One of the most underrated “Haley the Defiant” moments came with the look she gave when Randy uttered those simply nasty and hurtful words “everybody except Haley.” Seeing it again brought me back to moment when I nearly hurled my wine glass into my new flat screen TV. Both my wife and I jumped to our feet in anger. The look she gave was priceless. And then in the interview she talked about having to look away with tears in her eyes. My own tears welled up when I watched that part of the interview today. How a 20 year old kid could pull herself together in the space of a few minutes blows my mind.

Comment by JT – June 17, 2011 04:07 PM PDT

Quote:Right??? I was so mad when Randy said that too. It was just so blatantly cruel. There was no reason for him to say it EXCEPT to be cruel. The goal in that moment was to make her cry and feel like crap, and I’m sorry. That’s not good TV; it’s Randy showing himself to be a nasty person. And yet so many people were saying, “Oh Haley’s such a b*tch. She was so mad and ungrateful she wouldn’t even look at Randy.” And all I could think was, “Are you kidding me??” I don’t think so. I think he just broke her there for a second, and then this 20-year-old kid pulled herself together and came back to give him the metaphorical finger. She earned so much respect from me in that moment. I had liked her for awhile by then, but that was a game changer in how much I was paying attention to who she actually was.

Comment by MA – June 17, 2011 05:17 PM PDT

You pretty much summed up what we all felt. I’m so incredibly proud of Haley for being this strong role model.

Comment by EvaneSam – June 17, 2011 05:39 PM PDT

Quote:Spot on. I haven’t been able to view Randy as anything but a vile, disgusting slug since then. I was pretty angry with him after his nonsense diatribe after Earth Song when he just wouldn’t shut up but when he said everyone except Haley was tied for the best, I flat out thought he should be fired. I don’t think I’ll ever regain an ounce of respect for the man. That was just over the top out of line. I can’t imagine the pressure on her in that moment and for her to come back with that amazing performance immediately after was a real triumph for her though I wish she’d never been put into that position in the first place.

Comment by Siri – June 17, 2011 06:56 PM PDT

JLo taking credit for the fact that Haley managed to give a great show after the lashings irked me too. I really hate that approach. I had college professors who liked to do that too. Bash and bash and bash until you crack just to see if you have the stuff to pull it together. Yes, she does. Good girl. Was the bashing really the only way to see that she’s a tough cookie?? Like…really?

Comment by MA – June 17, 2011 09:19 PM PDT

Quote:“My sister is not a typical 15-year old”

LOL – I bet people were saying that about you at 15 as well, Haley. Because you surely don’t give the vibe of a typical 20-year old Smile

Comment by Tom K – June 17, 2011 04:09 PM PDT

Beyonce: “Haley has guts. She has balls. She has conviction and makes you believe what she believes in.”

Comment by Satchvai – June 18, 2011 08:35 AM PDT

Quote:On a show like Idol, someone like Haley runs the risk of intimidating her peers in the voting public because she comes across as so mature and so confident. She’s not scared or small or whatever they often feel (even though in real life, of course she feels all those things, everyone does, and she’s most certainly still young and kidlike). But she’s too mature to show it, so they subconsciously fear her and what she represents as far as growing up, forsaking childhood, etc. For those of us who don’t fear that anymore (I’m 38), we just see an incredibly talented, articulate, and poised young woman, and we say 1) Wow! She sure can rock out, and 2) Wow! She sure is a mature, cool kid who puts a lot of her generation to shame. And we respect that. If Haley were 30 years old, her mad-texting peers would see her as an adult, not as a rival, and they wouldn’t be intimidated by her...As a general rule (and of course there are always exceptions), kids like bland things because they’re a safe way to explore their own maturation. Haley? Ain’t safe. And that’s a big reason that we grownups dig her.

Comment by MA – June 18, 2011 09:28 AM PDT

Eh, I think you might be alienating a lot of her younger fans with this kind of speculation. I’m honestly convinced that the kids doing the power voting didn’t pick her because they come from that segment of the audience that is still, incomprehensibly, charmed by the idea of nice Christian kids who wear purity rings and etc., Haley was a little too sexual for their tastes, so they sequestered her off into the “whore” category to contrast with Lauren’s “Madonna.” Same thing with Pia.

Comment by Nukka – June 18, 2011 09:49 AM PDT

Quote:Well, to that I’d say…exactly. You think purity rings and the Jonas Brothers aren’t safe and non-sexual? (I don’t put Taylor Swift in this category at all; that girl has balls and smarts and runs her many parts of her own career. I’ve got a lot respect for her.) Some people cling to those boundaries as kids and then relinquish them later. And some continue to see value in them as adults. That’s OK. But I don’t know a single adult who ever considered Haley to be a “whore,” which honestly I don’t even like writing in the same sentence as my girl. The middle school mentality might go there, but an adult Christian, for the most part, will not.

That doesn’t mean, though, that the Idol producers weren’t going for the sexual vs. nonsexual contrast. I think they probably were. Idol is about making money, and if the producers believe that someone like Lauren or Scotty will make them more money (and they’re probably right; contrast Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood), that’s who they will push to win. Right, wrong, good, bad, that’s a fact of life. It’s a tough lesson for someone (Haley) to learn, but we’ve all had to learn it. Now what she has to do is rise above it. I think she can.

Comment by MA – June 18, 2011 10:17 AM PDT

It’s not just the kids. My sister is a 62 year old rabid AI fan and said “I would never vote for her. She is under the control of Satan – I mean, just look how she dresses and behaves on the stage. Just shameful…blah blah blah”.
The really sad thing is that my sister is also an accomplished musician, and yet she still supported Scotty for the win, because, and I quote, “he loves Jesus and has morals”.
Her and I have not spoken since…

Comment by Billy – June 18, 2011 11:52 PM PDT

Quote:I noticed that she does say ‘whatever will be, will be’ but she doesnt come across as someone lacking in determination either. The way she performed “I who have nothing” after being very hurt emotionally shows someone with uncommon personal determination. The only times the “whatever” thing comes out is when its something that is totally out of her hands – like being in the bottom 3 and voting closed yesterday.

Comment by Andrew – June 18, 2011 05:37 PM PDT

Watching these vids (for the umpteenth time) I just gotta vent a little that Haley was ever labelled as having a bad attitude. Her attitude is absofrickenlutely superb. Que sera… whatever will be will be… it always is a blessing in disguise… there’s always going to be a reason for everything.

When she was in the bottom 3 four times out of the first seven weeks she always took it in stride with a big beautiful smile.

When she smeared red lipstick on her face, dropped lyrics, fell on stage, she laughed it all off and carried on like a trooper.

When she was picked on and criticized more than any other contestant by the “judges” she never cracked, she stayed strong and gave the most outstanding performances of the season.

Anyone who said Haley had a bad attitude clearly did not watch the entire season. She only stood up for herself ONE TIME (top 4 week) against Randy Jerkson when he went way too far. He didn’t need to repeat his “critique” of Earth Song five times! Even Jennifer Hopez said ‘Randy just went on way too long’.

Also, him saying that round one was a tie between everyone except Haley minutes before she had to sing her second song was just plain cruel. For Haley to come out and slay ‘I Who Have Nothing’ after that was dang impressive and I admire her more than I can put into words.

“Haley picked ‘What is and What Should Never Be’ by Led Zepplin. It’s is a very interesting song choice. It just shows her gut, her ____ (?explitive). It shows her strength and her fearlessness. She is a risk taker. She didn’t pick a pop song that everyone knows. She has conviction. She makes you believe in what she believes in, which is a huge part of being a Superstar.”

“I think Haley is a Rock Star. Haley has a presense. Even when she’s not singing, I don’t think I’ve heard anyone like her.” then directly to Haley: “Your tone is so warm. Your’e raspyness is so natural. It’s not forced. You’re Incredible”

Harry Reinhart during Haley's hometown visit:

Quote:“I always knew she was a toughie, but I didn't know she was this tough,” said Harry, looking at the trail of photographers, cameras and reporters up and down Wheeling High School's hall. “This is going to make a hell of a scrapbook.”

“Thanks, dad,” said Haley, leaning in for a hug.

I’ve said before it took a while for me to get on the Haley bus, but I honestly consider it an honor and humbling to have watched someone so young (20 yrs old – my god, I found mid-terms overwhelming) stand her ground against people so well-known and so malicious. It’s rather bizarre (and perhaps evidence of a higher power) that after going to such lengths to avoid giving Haley any screen time or personal edits, the producers inadvertently gifted her with the ‘narrative’ that captured the attention of not just Idol viewers but all those performers quoted above. After all, we wouldn’t have seen her extraordinary courage and integrity if she hadn’t been faced with such heinous behavior. Hah! I love poetic justice – it’s my favorite kind. Rock on, sweet hippy chick.

DEBRA BYRD, her AI vocal coach, after the Earth Song judging:

Quote:It’s tough, especially when there are four [contestants], and you sing your face off, and you’re the one that’s told, “Ehh, everybody was great except you.” Her skin is getting tougher, and I have to say we have a lot of talks about this. It’s a learning process for her as it would be for anyone who’s going through that kind of thing. It’s not like she folds and crumbles. It becomes a fighter’s mentality and I applaud her for it. Because you either do that or you die. Those are your choices. And she has no plans of dying on the vine.
