Idol ratings drop -- Did they shoot themselves in the foot in shooting down Haley?

I do have to given Steven props, though, for coming to Haley's defense on several ocassions. My favorite quote, not verbatim, "If I agreed with you, Randy, then we'd both be wrong."

Cherelann, I’m aware that Steven rose to Haley’s defense on several occasions, and I do appreciate him doing that. And it was unfair/unkind of me to suggest that he was “sleeping” on the job.

But once his vocabulary was stripped of his more “colorful” language, he seemed to withdraw or shut down, which is a real shame. When I see the clips of the auditions, he seems so engaged. I get the sense that he appreciates and understands all genres of music far better than either Randy or J-Lo demonstrate, and, oddly, I think his ear is probably better than both Randy and J-Lo combined. (I say oddly because it’s possible/probable that he’s developed hearing loss, given the band he was in.)

All of which means he has so much more that he could contribute to the development of these kids -- and he says “that was beautiful – beautiful, man.” It’s kind of sad.

Yes, from her 'Fallin' performance. This is where Randy starts the whole "not rooting for Haley" thing. Since it was the Top 24 night, if Jlo had not sided with Steven things might have been different for Haley. Although, Steven probably would have chosen her for a wildcard if she had not made the Top 10.

I'm assuming your picture is the real deal of Cherelann (nice picture)...which is pretty cool in the age of anonymous posting, and is a good fit for the real deal...Haley Reinhart.

Wednesday ratings from TVByTheNumbers:

American Idol drew a 6.4 adults 18-49 rating last night. That’s down from 13.5% from last week’s two-hour premiere and down a fairly massive 30% from the equivalent Wednesday telecast a year ago (a two-hour version) that averaged a 9.2 adults 18-49 rating and 25.37 million viewers. Fox still easily won Wednesday night though with both total viewers and adults 18-49.

Last night’s Idol drew 20 million viewers.

Though the broadcast managed to grow more than a full point in the second half of the hour-long broadcast, it still marked a 9 percent drop from the previous week's 6.5. Viewership for the Fox singing contest is down just more than 20 percent from last year at this time, and ratings in the adult demographic (18 to 49 years old) have dropped an alarming 33 percent.

...American Idol's audience peaked in 2006, averaging 30.3 million viewers per episode for Season Five. The fan base has shrunk every year since then (with the exception of last season). Thus far in Season 11, Idol is averaging just under 20 million viewers.

..."Every year, the median age [of the audience] gets older and older," says Brad Adgate, senior vice president of research for Horizon Media in New York. "It started out in the low 30s and now it's creeping close to 50."

That trend, a liability for advertisers, has accelerated this season. "Idol is not only losing viewers," says Adgate, "the median age is almost three years older than it was a year ago."

I'll bet they're wishing they had Haley back this season, or hoping to find another like her.

There sure have been a lot of girls going through who have a similar "vibe" to Haley. Lots of sultry, bluesy types. LOVE it!! I have watched from the beginning and always will, but IMO there's no way they can beat last year. Like Casey said, her voice is a once in a lifetime discovery.

Yeah I guess you can say the age media age is getting a little broader, getting into their 50s and even 60-year-old and that doesn't put us old guys in a box. Just because were up there in age has nothing to do with what kind of music we grew up with. I can say when the Beatles came along in the early 60s I was on their soul train there was many stages of rock 'n roll from the British invasion to semi-heavy metal when Led Zeppelin came along psychedelic music, Jesus music, and everything in between. I think the reason why Idol and this is just my opinion is losing viewers and that is because season 10 peak the so-called pinnacle there will never be another season 10 and as far as I'm concerned Haley is the type of female artist that I was looking for with such greats like Janis Joplin Janis Ian the Wilson sisters Laura Branigan Pat Benatar all of these hard rock women pioneered the age of rock for women. So now Haley comes along and blows the crap out of everybody on season 10 this no need to look anymore no need to search out American Idol I have found her and we have found her name is Haley look no further. I don't know if this makes any sense but I think you understand what I mean.LOL definitely the year of the Rinehart.

I suspect that there are a variety of reasons, one being the bitter aftertaste of what Randy and J-Lo did to Haley; another being that there is now a glut of such shows, that ennui has set in.
