The musical stylings of Haley Reinhart
Quote:It is fun watching her light up when she tells the story about Moanin. You can tell she really enjoyed being able to finally tell it. I think she holds the whole Moanin experience pretty close to her heart.

I think it goes beyond just Moanin’. She has hinted in several interviews, post Idol, that she regretted not being able to show her Jazzy side as much as Casey was able to do.

Funny, really because in a previous interview she said that she was never into Jazz until she found out she was good at it when she joined her high school band.

It was something like, she had to scat and found she could do it by just trying, sort of like she found out she could yodel by singing “Blue”, in other words, her talent apparently is “effortless”.

(There is a clip on YouTube of the Atlanta/Microsoft event where she explains, at 8 yrs old, she told her parents she could yodel like Leann Rimes, they laughed, until she showed them. After that, they had her performing that song everywhere.)

Quote:Well…, right I’ve seen all those interviews too. It certainly comes across very clearly in them that she wishes she had been able to do more of this. I’m sure Haley enjoyed doing most of the other songs she did since she seems to have a pretty eclectic taste when it comes to things she likes to perform. But from what I can discern jazz holds a special place in her heart. That is why I think Moanin, how it came to be, and the response the performance received is probably very special to her.

I’ve used the word “organic” a few times in my discussions about Haley, and I think that’s the crux of her passion for Jazz, and especially how “Moanin’” came about.

Alot of Jazz, comes from improvisation, start it off with some skins and high hat, bring in the bass, then the keys and maybe some brass, then the vocalist starts riffing.

How “Moanin’” came about sounds sort of like that, and the congruence of Ray and her knowing the song, and Casey happening to have done that in the audition (unaware of the words)…the fates were aligned and like she said, she doesn’t like to ignore signs. I bet that whole process was extremely thrilling for her.

Quote:That is frequently the way it happens. Not sure that’s how “Moanin” obtained its lyrics. In the fifties (maybe before), certain singers began reproducing jazz recordings by putting lyrics to jazz pieces and their improvisational solos. Eddie Jefferson (immortalized by Manhatten Transfer’s tribute to both he and Coleman Hawkins in “Body and Soul”)was one of those. It’s a style known as “vocalese.”

I know that a group called Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross recorded “Moanin” on an album they released in 1959/60. I suspect, although, I’m striking out (on internet searches)that Jon Hendricks wrote the “Moanin” lyrics. (Unfortunately, I no longer have that album to check.)

As an artist Haley is totally into the improvisational aspect of singing because she loves that sense of working without a net, that chance to discover something new and to soar into it, on the other hand when you work without a net there are times you will crash and burn. So Haley realized that if she wanted a shot at winning she had to find a road map through a song that would take her where she wanted to end up, Casey chose to not do that and ended up in some bad places.

Quote:My standard answer to what kind of artist Haley is:

A damn good one!

Haley clearly got that this was a theme show, as did I. I believe that Haley merely wanted to maybe get in a song or two that showed this side of herself because she loves jazz so much. I think Haley knows exactly who she is as an artist, I also think that Haley knew exactly what she needed to do to get as far as she could in the show. It is a credit to her character, immense talent and musical instincts that she figured it all out and got as far as she did. If the voting rules had been different she would have won the whole enchilada.

Quote:Haley has the ability to make any song sound unique and original. “Bennie and the Jets” and “House of the Rising Sun” do not sound like cover songs of Elton John or the Animals. They sound like brand new songs because of the way Haley changes up the arrangement, adds her own distinct vocals and phrasing to it, and it just works so beautifully every time. Pure ear candy.

Tony Bennett:

“Watching the show, year in and year out, but especially this year, lots of the singers sing a little too … a little too … they end up screaming instead of singing. She knows how to SING!” “She’s so sensitive, this girl.”

“Amazing. She’s so good at singing that I think the challenge for her is the drama...You’re gunna kick so much ass, you little pony."
