Interview - THR
Awesome interview! (At least a couple beans worth)
Quote:'American Idol's' Haley Reinhart Talks New Album, Guest Stars (Exclusive)
THR got an early listen of the season 10 finalist's debut which is due out in May.
...The Hollywood Reporter got an early listen at the yet-untitled full-length (due out in May) and all its retro goodness -- songs like “Oh My,” a mid-tempo number featuring big horns, tambourines and echoing drums, “Keep Coming Back,” with its sexy vocals distorted ever so slightly, and “Undone,” a teary ballad worthy of “diva” designation, what with its piano-led melody, soaring vocals and strings. But perhaps the song that best serves Reinhart’s soulful sound and vibe is “Wasted Tears,” which, with its groovy bassline and girl group-esque “woos” sounds like it came straight from another era....
The Hollywood Reporter: When we first started talking, you seemed surprise at the support you received from Interscope Records and 19 Entertainment, were you expecting a struggle?
Haley Reinhart: Well, you never know how it's gonna work out. And they kind of act surprised when they're dealing with me. They're, like, “Things don't usually go this smooth” or “people don't usually come in knowing exactly who they are and what they want.” With the songwriting process as well -- I've always been a songwriter, I’ve just never really had the chance to get in a studio and execute it. So the more I go in and say, “I want this vibe this and this to be the topic,” then the more it comes out sound like me....
...THR: B.o.B. provides a guest rap on “Oh My,” how did that come about?
Reinhart: The label hooked it up. We went through some fill-ins and then they asked me, “Who's your dream rapper?” So I thought, I love Andre 3000, he would be the coolest ever. And then there's people like Lupe Fiasco or Common who have this very sultry vibe. B.o.B. was new to me, but the more I hear him and from everybody I talk to, I think he's so cool. Right when I heard it, I was like, “Geez, this is perfect.”...

Quote:THR: Do you feel like you were born in the wrong decade?
Reinhart:Totally. But there has to be a reason for me to be here now – to bring it back, slip through the cracks and get people to listen.

Makes me think about Haley's remarks that Wetpaint interview a couple months ago:“I'm working my tail off,” she admits. “I like being a part of the writing process, and they're starting to understand that I want to be really hands on with everything."
Quote:Haley Reinhart: Well, you never know how it's gonna work out. And they kind of act surprised when they're dealing with me. They're, like, “Things don't usually go this smooth” or “people don't usually come in knowing exactly who they are and what they want.”
So she got them to understand and it went really well. The last remark here cuts right back at Jimmy Iovine, Randy, and others who felt she didn't know who she it music-wise. It underscores the censored remark she blurted out on AI when Jimmy expressed that belief.
There is irony in this. Haley is a woman of substance way beyond her years. I think that a big reason Haley didn't fold under the AI pressure is because she brought with her a clear sense of what she values musically (and otherwise) and an unblushing awareness of her vocal talents.
This interview also confirms what many of us expected; Haley is continuing to rapidly develop as an artist and entertainer.
While I'm not a fan of the genre, I am excited to hear that B.o.B. will be rapping on "Oh My." I'm expecting more of a flavorful accent than a core element of the song. This also looks like another sign that Interscope is very committed to Haley's album. And it can't hurt to have an artist on the album who appears on multiple songs that have drawn more than 100 million YT views.

You know I still can remember that night when they showed Haley backstage soon after her “Fallin” performance and Randy's admonishment, where she seemed a bit perturbed and worried at the same time, when she gazed into the camera and said to the effect that she wanted this more than anything and I can't really see myself doing anything else. Of course, it was hard to imagine back then just how really determined that young girl was, but looking back now today it is absolutely amazing how much fight that little petite girl had in her body. I don't think there is anything that can stop Haley Reinhart once she makes up her mind that she really wants something. She is absolutely relentless and fearless.
