You're welcome. I didn't know Myles either, but he has an amazing voice. I just came upon the interview and thought I'd share it.
Since he made the Spokane reference, I was curious and read the Wikipedia info on him. (I grew up in the area and lived in Spokane a few years, before going to graduate school and eventually moving to Seattle.) He went to school at Mead (in Spokane), which had had a fairly sad music program back in my day (I didn't go there, but it's band was ahead mine in a parade, and I got to hear how lacking in energy it was.) By the time he would have been in high school, Mead had gotten a new band director and it's music program was really blossoming. (I'm not particularly fond of marching bands, but in the '80's, this band was smokin' hot!)
He followed that by attending a community college in the area that had some much respected and well known (for Spokane) musicians as instructors. Thus, he's cut his teeth in some fairly good music programs.

The high school I went to in Bellevue didn't even have a music program it's first yr. My class was the first freshman class of the school...it had limited classes/extracuriculars. They had one the next year and there was always this guy hangin' out there on the drums. He was a class ahead of me, but was always nice and friendly...always in the music room with his drums.
After I graduated, a few years later, I saw him, Scott Mercado, was on MTV as the drummer for the grunge band Candlebox! LOL (real nice guy, hard worker and deserved his success.

My only point was, in this instance, Scott Mercado was already talented with his own inertia and despite attending a school with practically no Music Program, he succeeded by joining one of the bigger grunge bands of that time....
I count myself as artistically inclined so I would never disparage arts programs. They are entirely necessary for personal growth and it's a sad state of affairs in the US that it's the arts that gets cut when financial times are hard.
Thanks, Miguel and Tusk, for your responses. Miguel was correct, although I most certainly was not clear in pointing out that Myles had opportunities through some music programs that I could attest to being quite good.
But Tusk, your response reminded me that while a good music program can be of great benefit for those involved in standard choral or instrumental programs, someone such as a drummer (playing a drum set) or a guitarist may have much more limited opportunities. While Myles did play guitar with a school jazz band, if there had been many wanting that opportunity and others who who deemed to be "better," he might have ended up like Scott Mercado -- using his own initiative and drive to pursue his interest.

I just love all you people & your responses. It is very educational for me to read your thoughtful & insightful posts. Although I am not a prolific poster, I am a serial viewer of the posts. If I were as knowledgeable as you guys I would post more, lol.
Anyway, thanks again, John, for posting the Myles interview that stirs the pot & makes for interesting discussions. Knowledgable and Opinionated are two different things LOL...I'm afraid I'm more the latter than the former....
You don't have to be 'knowledgeable' to enjoy posting...I love getting through a stimulating conversation at times, and sometimes they can be frustrating as well....(PS Google is a good friend in these circumstances...you can have an opinion, just make sure the facts you use to back it up are accurate LOL)
