RE: The Beatles - Anything and Everything - My Alter Ego - 06-26-2013 (06-25-2013, 12:57 PM)Tusk Wrote: PAUL McCARTNEY AT KENNEDY CENTER HONORS (Complete) Tusk, thanks for bring this to our -- or, at least my -- attention. So glad that Sir Paul was feted in this way. I agree with most of your above comments: Baldwin's monologue intro was great (I particularly loved how he sounded "choked up" when announcing that NIH [National Institutes of Health] declared "Beatlemania" with "no [known] cure"); Paul's father's assessment regarding "Americanisms", although I'm glad the young "Sir Paul" didn't heed PaPa's advice. "She loves you, yes, yes, yes" with all those silibants just doesn't work for me. And, if it doesn't work for me when I'm kind of a stickler for good enunciation, how would those without my "attentiveness to detail" handle it? Personally, I could have lived without either David Grohl or James Taylor. Nora Jones could have done a far better job by herself and whomever joined James Taylor added far more grit & soul to Hey Jude than James could ever hope to. But, without a doubt, it was Steven Tyler's medley (and what a medley it was!!!) that was the highlight of the show! The respect, admiration, and love that Steven displayed was obvious and palpable -- and, ultimately, made the performance. That "Sir Paul" responded in kind, makes it all the more endearing. I was fascinated by the "Lennon audition" for The Voice. Even more ironically, that's followed by the "Bob Dylan audition" for The Voice. It's revealing about the times and what's considered "musically important" these days. And, given how many current stars need to be autotuned, it says even more. But the McCartney tribute was delightful. RE: The Beatles - Anything and Everything - Tusk - 06-26-2013 My pleasure MAE, I still enjoy the heck out of that Tyler performance, so cool to see how genuinely proud and joyous he was to perform for his Idol. As you say, it was palpable.... .... Another thing, how cool was it at the end of that video tribute @ 7:05 they show Paul with his arms outstretched EXACTLY like that photo of Haley during the AI tour Gave me chills and goosebumps ![]() ![]() I'm gonna give Dave Grohl a pass, as the former drummer of Nirvana, and one of the last standing, IMO, true rockers around, I really feel he is in it for the love of music every time I see him, I dig the grit he brings. I have learned to be very fond of him, and it looked like Paul was digging his performance, especially the guitar work. In fact, I know McCartney recognizes and likes Grohl.... Here Paul joins the remaining members of Nirvana Grohl has performed for Paul before, "Band On the Run" And here Grohl plays drums behind McCartney for "Back in the USSR" Sure Grohl isn't about being pitch perfect and clarity, he comes from grunge and down and dirty rock and roll which rarely has room for crystal clear clarity (fun with alliteration ![]() ![]() No doubt, though... completely out of their league ![]() RE: The Beatles - Anything and Everything - My Alter Ego - 06-26-2013 (06-26-2013, 08:31 PM)Tusk Wrote: My pleasure MAE, I still enjoy the heck out of that Tyler performance, so cool to see how genuinely proud and joyous he was to perform for his Idol. As you say, it was palpable.... Yup, proud and joyous!! How did I miss adding that, because that's really the essence of Tyler's performance, isn't it!?! (Duh SMH!) And, about David Grohl, it's just that he isn't the "best" singer. He's not bad, he's just kind of a mediocre vocalist (which is being kind). I get the other "roles" he's had in the evolution of "rock music." Which is why they should have had Nora Jones singing the bulk of "Maybe I'm Amazed" and just had David Grohl playing guitar and doing some vocal back up ad libs. Oh well -- it's over -- it's done with. But it probably demonstrates not the best of decisions made regarding a show of this kind. But, again, ultimately, it's that "mutual admiration society" between Steven Tyler and "Sir Paul" that really makes this show "sing." What an infinite delight! RE: The Beatles - Anything and Everything - Tusk - 06-26-2013 Norah did sound pretty good, didn't she? ... I wouldn't have minded if she sang the whole song either ![]() And how cool that a daughter of Ravi Shankar is there to perform for Paul all these years later I'm also glad that James Taylor gave way to Mavis Staples, her grit and soul made that song IMO. I love James Taylor's music (another of the soundtrack of the '70's) but it was so much better with Mavis (did you see Michelle Obama's reaction when it was announced? Obviously a fan) I don't know much about her, but she's had a loooong career .... I like this ![]() ![]() RE: The Beatles - Anything and Everything - My Alter Ego - 06-28-2013 Well, I was just browsing through some other stuff, when I ended up on a page that had a photo of Oprah (and Stedman -- he comes across as a "steady fellow" so Stedman's a good name for him), and the outfit that Oprah had on looked very similar to what she appears to be wearing when seated next to Sir Paul. Turns out, Oprah was also honored that year. (I'd wondered why she was seated next to him -- I was struggling with the connection. I no longer am.) So, to honor Oprah, at least one of the ways, to acknowledge her efforts in bringing Color Me Purple to film and to stage. So the song "I'm Here" from the musical version of the show -- was sung by (to quote Miss Candice Glover) the "amazing Jennifer Hudson!" It's not quite full circle, but it's back to AI which is how most of us learned about the "astonishing Miss Haley Reinhart." RE: The Beatles - Anything and Everything - Tusk - 07-25-2013 This could have been posted in the "Youtube Surfin' " thread. I had no idea that the Beatles Stereo Box Set was released on 09/09/09 (Or maybe I forgot.....) Until I came across this vid That would be Haley's 19th Birthday....didn't she start competing for AI when she was 19? Coincidence? ![]() RE: The Beatles - Anything and Everything - My Alter Ego - 07-27-2013 Tusk, here's a youtube performance I just came across from Germany, I believe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2YiPjv4NKg For the record, from a technically musical standpoint, I can't, for the life of me, figure out why they turned the last syllable of "lullabye" in to two syllables ("by" and -- "ee"). That's so far removed from the "British choir standard" of how I learned singing about 20 years ago. But, nonetheless, its an extraordinary set. RE: The Beatles - Anything and Everything - Tusk - 09-19-2013 Because I went looking for Haley's acapella cover of Because, I happened upon this, he sings the harmonies for the three Beatles in this song, John (Melody) George (Low) Paul (High) and here it is all together RE: The Beatles - Anything and Everything - buzzenator - 09-19-2013 ^Very nice Tusk...loved the head bobs...they were pretty much in harmony too. ![]() RE: The Beatles - Anything and Everything - Tusk - 09-26-2013 44 Years ago today, Abbey Road was released in the UK Quote:Abbey Road is the 11th studio album released by the English rock band the Beatles.
