... Cash In... her salary on Idol will almost certainly be more than what she personally pulled out of her biggest album .

Her first album was in 2001,.. it didn't sell, she got dropped by her label, and it wasn't until 2008 that she had her next album out .. and that did go big with some promotion and a good nod from Madonna and a bit of a hook to the news angle of the lyric (no such thing as bad promotion?)

She was at it a loooong time before success .. dropping out of traditional school early, studying a tiny bit of opera, singing gospel in initial professional gigs.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katy_Perry

I think it is easy to think of these "pop stars" as lightweight lucky people but, boy their biographies show that most of them worked their butts off in an incredibly driven way ...before they caught their lucky break....
...and they need to keep working to take advantage of that break too.
