Let me get this out first and let me be clear: It makes me REALLY angry that a 12 year old kid has fingers that are longer than mine, as an adult!! Now that I've aired my rant...

Wow! Given that Nicholas is as young as he is, he may have a change of mind/heart regarding pursuing a lifetime as a concert pianist as time goes on. (I recently learned that a friend of mine wanted to become a concert pianist -- until his senior year of high school, when he decided he wanted to have more fun, which ruled out the hours of practice needed. He kicks himself now, but...)

So, assuming young Nicholas keeps with it, his is a name to remember. Thanks, Tusk, for finding this.

George Gershwin was such an extraordinary -- and REAL -- artist -- and gone far too soon (before his 39th birthday)! "Of Gershwin, I can't sing" too much praise. From the silly stuff of "Swanee" ("how I hate ya, how I hate ya" -- yes, that's my rendition of the lyrics. I have my reasons.) to Broadway musicals (Of Thee I Sing was the first musical comedy to win a Pulitzer) to his explorations in the classical genre, it's a trajectory that few others have traveled and been as successful.

Back in the 'olden' days, pre video games, when there were only three TV Channels, my Dad gave me "Holst the Planets" to listen to. Which was odd, I guess he wanted to get me interested in classical music.

I ended up loving it, because I was big time into adventure stories, mythologies and sci-fi , so this album supplied the soundtrack for my imagination as I immersed myself into the books... great stuff.

This is "Mars" , one of the more 'known' compositions from the album

^^ Very Nice! Both the Holst Mars clip and the re-post of that Hay-Field video kicked off a long-overdue and intimate listening session with some of my favorite horn blowers.

My dad was a great trumpeter so I grew up with a tremendous amount of love and respect for the brass. I didn't realize it until tonight, but I've had a deaf ear to the trumpets since dad passed. Anyways, thanks again for posting-up with those those videos guys, it kicked off some long overdue healing.

Tusk, that was a good move on your Dad's part. Perhaps he wanted to get you interested in classical musical .... but, perhaps, he recognized that you would do precisely what you ended up doing. Anyway, a wise move on his part.
