Wow, here I am with back to back posts about Scotty.

Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery landed on Television Without Pity/Yahoo!’s “The Very Worst Reality Stars of 2011″ list. The website had this to say about Scotty:

We wanted to smack his smug face throughout most of the season. But he really earned his spot on this list by exploiting the nation’s painful memories of 9/11 for his own personal gain a week after Osama bin Laden was killed. We can only pray his career doesn’t last nearly as long as Carrie Underwood’s.

Certainly uncalled for!

While I can't bring myself to consider "country" to be "music," nor can I think of him as an artist (artist? --really? --Scotty's being put in the class of the likes of YoYo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, Lang Lang?? - really???), what I do like about Scotty is that he seems like a smart, down to earth, humble, unpretentious young man. I'm hugely encouraged by his approach everytime I read that he's not letting his music get in the way of his schooling. (The fact that his entertaining may pay for his college is icing -- and more proof of how smart he is!)

Television Without Pity --perhaps others need to take it to task -- without an ounce of pity.

I wasn't surprised to see a site called Television Without Pity write such words. But I was surprised to see Yahoo! associate themselves with it.

By the time Season 11 begins Jan. 18, McCreery will have performed twice here -- two months ago at Mystic Lake Casino and this Saturday with Paisley at Xcel Energy Center.

"Being aggressive is something that needs to happen," McCreery said from his family home in Garner, N.C., just south of Raleigh. "Even when I was on the show, I remember talking to the producers saying that I want my album to come out quickly because I don't want the people forgetting about me. I'm going to work my tail off.

"One of my sayings from my baseball days is 'Go big or go home.' We want to go big. Right now, we're just trying to get out there and make sure people know we're still around."

...On "American Idol," he exhibited the confidence and charisma of someone twice his age. He credits baseball.

"My dad pitched in college and he raised me on the pitcher's mound," McCreery reflected. "If you're the pitcher, all eyes are on you -- everybody in the stands and the team is depending on you. Being onstage and having all eyes on me, it's kind of a transition from baseball to the stage for me."

...If he had his choice of being the American Idol or the winning pitcher in the final game of the World Series, McCreery would opt for vocal champ.

"Baseball is something I've enjoyed doing but singing has been a passion for me since I was little," said McCreery, who sang the national anthem at the first game of the 2011 World Series. "This is what I want to do, be out there with the music and the guitar, making art."

It's probably not difficult to exhibit confidence when you're discussing the timing of your album rollout with the show's producers.

Now that it is 2012 and the holiday shopping season is over, all the American Idol alumni saw a large scale slowdown in their album sales. Even the top selling "Clear As Day" saw its lowest sales week to date, moving only 22K units to bring Scotty McCreery's total sales tally to 856K. It even dropped to #3 on the Country chart as Jason Aldean sold a few more copies of "My Kinda Party" then "Clear As Day" to push Scotty out of the Top 2 where he has lived for the past 3 months. On the overall BillBoard chart the album fell to #21, its first time out of the Top 15. However, with American Idol Season 11 about to start up (as well as the Brad Paisley tour), I could see "Clear As Day" sales popping back up the charts, especially in the slow sales winter period for all the other artists.

I believe the graph depicts cumulative sales across weeks.

The other American Idols with albums currently out saw their sales drop as well. Kelly Clarkson saw the smallest drop with her "Stronger" album which outsold "Clear As Day" this week with 25K in sales to push her total to 451K. Daughtry sold another 18K units to push his total to 316K, Lauren sold another 6K units of "Wildflower" to reach 221K and James Durbin sold 4K more to reach 74K

Found this website. Not sure what to make of it or if I care, but their prediction scheme clear about one thing last season: Scotty was untouchable.

Scotty McCreery’s debut album Clear as Day has gone platinum. Scotty’s mom tweeted, “Scotty with a 1940s Gibson guitar given to him by his producer Mark Bright to celebrate ClearAsDay going platinum. The tweet has been deleted. I expect a bigger, more formal announcement later.

I believe the graph depicts cumulative sales across weeks.

James' numbers show the challenge Haley faces. I expect her music though to generate more buzz and build. If she does get an Idol appearance this season, I would be curious to see if there's a big jump in sales that week.

DialIDOL apparently has a good track record. Once the show let people vote by text message the site's predictions became less accurate. That's my understanding based on discussions I have seen.

A couple more weeks of album sales shows a slowing after the holidays. Sales for Lauren and James have really flattened. Not sure what the end date is for this chart (post is from 01/18).

This week has been a slow one for all the Idols, as they all saw sales of their albums continue to fall except for James Durbin, whose "Memories of a Beautiful Disaster" actually increased 12% with 4,000 in sales, putting his total at 81K. James was able to sell more units than Lauren this week, who with an additional 3,000 this week increased her total to 228K. It is easy to see in my graph how the past 2 weeks has been a slow climb for all the Idols except for Kelly, whose graph still has a solid increase.
