Voyager 1 reaches interstellar space

Dr. Brian May, astrophysicist and New Horizons science team collaborator.

He may be better known for rocking out on tracks like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Fat Bottomed Girls,” but Queen guitarist Brian May was at NASA headquarters Friday to talk about a different kind of rock – Pluto, to be specific.

From 1970 to 1974, May worked on his PhD at Imperial College in London, England, but abandoned his studies as Queen became gained international success. In 2006, May returned to the school to complete his studies, earning his degree in 2007.

This photo was taken by the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) spacecraft from about one million miles away. The Earth and the Moon are both full as seen from this vantage point, but keep in mind what is seen is the far side of the moon, which never visible from Earth. (The green edge on part of the moon is an artifact from various filters used). The telephoto lense really takes away an sense of depth in the picture.

I just have a general interest in the cosmos. I follow a few related sites on my twitter feed such as space.com and a couple others for info. Twitter works well as a kind of specialized news feed. There is a lot going on with various unmanned missions these days.
