RE: Haley in NYC - March 8, 2013
^^^ I know your right Tusk. I just had to say it out loud. We are all so happy with Listen Up the way it is, and wouldn't have it any other way. Haley's gonna make it one way or another. And I want to be able to say I was there from the beginning.
with you, and Himmm, and Mae, and midnight, and NUG, and Buzz, and Miguel, and Stairway....well you get my jist hehehe

I know Haley wanted to make her album her way, but I feel fans would have gobbled those cds up right after the tour was over. six of one and half a dozen of the other. If you take a souffle out too fast, if flops.
Who's to say putting it out faster wouldn't mean that half or more of the songs would have been written by someone else and Haley wouldn't have got to experience the song writing part of the business the way she has, not to mention the potential royalties that will pay her into the future?
Bottom line, LU is basically her 'song writing' resume as well as her first LP. She has worked with name song writers and they with her and we saw recently that they are working with her now for songs on the EP...and that's with her not being signed... She doesn't have to prove herself to them to get them to work with her
Ultimately, it happened the way it was meant to happen IMO
Talent will win out, and Haley has truckloads
Babbs you might be right. It may have sold better if she had put out an album out right after the tour, BUT I agree w/ Tusk and was so happy that Haley didn't give into the pressure to throw together some, written for her, so so record because she felt the need to cater to people w/ the attention span of a knat. That spoke volumes as far as Haley being the kind of singer/artist who really cares about the music she creates.
I think it's fairly safe to say that, that's not the only time she has chosen a tougher more risky path because she cares a great deal about what type of artist she wants to be. And this is speculation, but I think it's fairly obvious that Haley could've agreed to release "Undone" as her 2nd single, and Interscope would've released it, and it would've been a hit. But I think Haley resisted that, not because it's a sad song (that's what she said, but I don't think it was the real reason) but because she was afraid of being forced into being too much of a straight up pop artist, and that's not what she wants to be.

30Camden, you bring up some good points. Haley did take the riskier path by waiting to put out her album. But don't you think Interscope could have rushed things a little once the songs were recorded. Remember last winter when everyone was waiting for the album to drop. It seems Haley didn't have much say about the timing of the release. Even her parents mentioned to me, that they didn't know why it was taking so long. Album done, say in december.... could have been released before May..
but, that all water under the bridge now....

They first moved back the release of Free. Most likely to coordinate with her appearance on Idol. Then they appeared to roughly follow a standard industry timeline for the release of the album following the single. Though they might have pushed it back a couple of weeks as well to coordinate with the publicity around the Idol finale.
I still believe the over-staging of Free during her Idol appearance hurt sales. If she had performed an acoustic version like she did on The View I bet many viewers would have been surprised the "growler" could sing like that and the song would have raced up the charts.
But, that's all hindsight.
What singer promoting her first single on national television for the first time wouldn't want all those resources?

I agree about both points, It's hard to fault Idol for going OTT for Haley in production. It was a nice gesture to 'treat her the way a Star is treated', to show her fans that they really and honestly, true and true, really, really, really Haley.
They erred on the side of over effort, and it just didn't work out

Listen Up...

Actually I didn't remember this. I wasn't following as closely then. I remember when she announced getting signed, in July, and really wasn't expecting anything right away, so I didn't pay much attention til' the single came out.
But yeah, assuming there wasn't a bunch of production work left to do on the album, I think it would've been much better if they would've released the single in January (maybe sent her out on that radio station tour then), and released Listen Up in March. All that TV exposure... AI, 90210, & Conan would've gone a lot farther if it had coincided w/ the release date of the album rather than the single.

RE: Listen Up! 2013 perspective
I agree with the comment that LU is her calling card as a writer, as well as amazing singer, so I'm so happy she did take the time to have her say in every part of its production. It just baffles me, after letting her write and give serious input on everything, making the video (which wasn't super expensive, but not cheap either)...why did their effort on her stop so early? Yes the mass dropping took place in the fall, but beyond setting up the radio tour, they really did nothing at all. Wasn't there talk that her Interscope rep got dropped, and she got someone else after Free was released...possibly the new person didn't have her back in the way the old one did? Not Chiara, someone who was on her side at Interscope...
All I can say is Haley is destined for this, my hope is she ends up with someone BIG enough for her to really grow and shine NOW not later. I'm an impatient woman.
