RE: Haley and Harry Connick Jr...
Hmmm…. It seems as though the Buzz isn’t the only person who’s been misunderstood. I suppose I brought it on myself, but my use of the word “useful” was never intended towards the negative, much less “usurous.” That was strictly the interpretation of some of you, dear readers.
It’s true. I don’t believe that Mayfield was so overwhelmed by Haley’s performance in his club that night, that he immediately decided he wanted to invite her to perform at Carnegie with him. That would require a suspension of what I consider rational thought – otherwise known as “magical thinking” -- that simply doesn’t work for me.
So I thought things through to find an explanation that did make sense to me. I don’t know whether I remember all of the possibilities that occurred to me, and it probably doesn’t matter that I do. However, as I worked through the various aspects here are a few things that kept coming back to me: performing at Carnegie had probably been a dream of Mayfield’s since he was in high school, maybe younger. Something that seems to be very important to him is his role as an “ambassador” of jazz, and hand in hand with that, his role as a music educator. (And I can't emphasize the importance of that last sentence enough.)
So he had an upcoming concert to fill out a complete program with the opportunity to show that jazz isn’t just for people above the age of—I don’t know 35. He’s recently had a couple of talented kids in his club “show their stuff;” there’s a video on youtube of one of those performances (as poor a recording as it was) that was garnering some attention. Voila – he can invite the subject of that video and fulfill that desire of his to reach out to the younger generation with his jazz message plus provide an opportunity for that young person. To me, it seemed like a win-win situation.
Is it conjecture as Tusk pointed out? Yes, I suppose it is. But again, it makes more sense to me than "magical thinking."

RE: Haley and Harry Connick Jr...
Yes, MAE, I believe you are misunderstood far more than most. Perhaps it is because your mind goes where other minds are afraid to go. We all like to view Haley through our rose colored glasses because she looks so pretty in pink...
I find your posts to be fascinating, thoughtful and intelligent because you are able to present a perspective that I had not even considered.
My one hope for this forum is that we don't become too frightened to stir the pot. Communicating with others can be very tenuous because we never know if we are getting a left brain or a right brain reaction from others but the brain needs to work synergistic-ally to be effective.
So Miss MAE, you just keep posting your "outside of the box" comments because the possibilities are endless.

Thanks, Cherelann -- I appreciate your comments as well. It's true -- I rather frequently don't conform to the consensus on this forum and, frankly, I frequently stay silent when I don't agree. Many times that's just fine.
But NUG had opened up a window -- I think it was the one in the bathroom -- and I took several deep breaths and dove in.
Haley does look pretty in pink, and rosy in red, and great in green ... well, you get the picture. But I suspect that Haley just wants to be a living, breathing human being, which means that she may make a mistake or two. Pedestals are NOT for the living -- and Haley strikes me as being very much ALIVE!

YES. And MAE, I agree with every word you said. I think if any place should be a safe place to speculate among friends, it's here. We are all HUGE fans of Haley, we're her base, core group, no one should question that. Haley is not perfect, she's not a doll that we can position into any direction. She's human and flawed just like us.
My opinion on the Carnegie discussion happens to be:
1) Irvin likely did not invite Haley and Casey that night. If it was me, not matter how impressed I was, I'd need a minute (or night) to think.
2) Irvin was "blown away" by Haley, and sees her as a great talent.
3) If I'm wrong on either of those points, I'll happily go to the corner and flog myself with the "Unworthy Halien" whip.

Thanks, Buzz.
In regards to Carnegie:
1.) We are aware of the invitation (through Twitter??) that Mayfield extended. Whether he might of done so privately earlier is unknown (to most of us). I very much doubt that he invited her the night she performed in his club. (On the other hand, he might have extended a permanent invitation to her to visit his club and sing anytime she's in the city. Again, that's not something the we, or at least I, know of.)
2.) This is where you and I diverge a bit, NUG. I think he was impressed with her that evening and recognizes that she is, indeed, very talented and has enormous potential (in other words, she's a work in progress). But Mayfield "hobnobs" with the jazz elite. He was classmates with one of the Marsalis boys and has recorded with Ellis Marsalis -- and that family is jazz royalty. Mayfield's standards for what he considers "great" may not be the same as yours.
3.) If, by chance, you may be wrong, there is absolutely no reason for you to flog yourself.
But I appreciate your posts -- and thanks for opening up the conversation.

Harry Connick Jr. was celebrating his 34th birthday when the World Trade Center Towers came crumbling down.
He's 46 today another reason he may have loved Haley of his same zodiac sign.
For lack of a better place (because it doesn't really seem useful to start a new thread), another Virgo with a slight connection to Haley is Jon Hendricks. Mr. Hendricks, as some of you may remember, is responsible for penning lyrics to a great number of instrumental jazz works (including Moanin and Mr. PC, songs Haley has sung). According to wikipedia "For his work as a lyricist, jazz critic and historian Leonard Feather called him the "Poet Laureate of Jazz" while Time dubbed him the "James Joyce of Jive." Al Jarreau has called him "pound-for-pound the best jazz singer on the planet—maybe that's ever been".
Mr. Hendricks is 92 years young today.
