Great and fun performance but honestly it's not orginal. He's just completely copying the Postmodern Jukebox's vintage version even without any melody changed.

+Amber McKinney I'm not being critical but only state the truth. PMJ has actually released thier version officially so what Mitch did is just choosing to do another version of Fancy which suits his singing style. But the performace absoulutely misled the coach to think it's his arrangment. That's the issue I'm talking about.

+Amber McKinney it's actually note for note a cover of the postmodern jukebox version. they deserve a mention at the very least! https://www.facebook.com/postmodernjukeb...2183719345 for reference

Of course hardly anybody pays royalties for covers that they do, but come on - credit could be given to the arranger for something as refreshing and original as this? I'm sure that's all Scott wants from this. It's not even about the money, it's about the recognition which he and PMJ deserve. Wouldn't you support them?

Lets settle this the easiest way possible. After all this is not about the money. IF this Mitch guy makes it to the live shows then PMJ should be invited to perform live on the Voice UK

I loved this! I have no idea what the tiny trousers are all about, but that aside I thought Mitch showed some real character, with a wonderful and original (?) arrangement. His diction and delivery were spot on, and his sassy and confident stage presence was palpable. He already looks like well rehearsed and professional star material. True, his voice was very nasal (often used as a means of controlling pitch) but the rest of his technical ability, including the falsetto moment, showed he has a good range of abilities that manage to transcend what to other singers would be a fatal flaw. He will be interesting to watch in the battles, and he might just blow the competition off the stage!

He stole this song. He didn't create it. He copied it EXACTLY. Original artist was "Postmodern Jukebox"... No credit given..?

+strnglhld That's why I put a question mark after saying it was an original arrangement. I suspected he might have lifted it from somewhere. Nevertheless, he did it justice.

Absolutely fucking appalling of the cunts at the BBC plagiarising the work of others without permission or giving credit. This along with the whole 'having sex with kids' thing are both shining examples of why the BBC should no longer be allowed to exist.

Anyone else think this arrangement is almost an exact copy of the "Postmodern Jukebox" cover?

He should be disqualified for making out the arrangement was his own and not crediting PMJ or asking permission to use it. Total looser!

+Sera Almeida Well, it is possible that PMJ owns the rights to that particular arrangement, depending on what kind of deal PMJ had with the original copyright holder of the song.

+sugar0o Yeah Scott actually tweeted or posted something on Facebook about having certain rights. Most of the time artists like PMJ don't have copyrights, but apparently they do, which is very smart.

One way or another, Scott's getting some publicity out of it.
I'm interested to see how this issue gets resolved. Over the weekend as I was pondering what might have happened (i.e. that the contestant simply didn't say anything; that he did but The Voice announcers didn't mention it; that they did announce it but it was cut, the most plausible possibilities to me), I've been wondering how they'll address it. It's interesting to me that we've heard no real mea culpa from either the contestant or The Voice brand.
No wonder Scott is disappointed. He, however, has been handling the "delicate situation" with aplomb. He should get decent publicity from it! Good grief.

Quote:“I was just honoured to be able to sing such a great version! I tell EVERYONE how much of a fan I am! and will keep on doing so!”
Mitch later added: “THANK YOU! and Massive Thank you to Postmodern Jukebox for creating an incredible version of ‘Fancy’ I’m a HUGE fan and it was an incredible experience to perform it on The Voice!
“Ive been sharing your covers for So long and now performing one on TV is just incredible! I’m hoping it makes more people aware of how incredible you guys are!!! hopefully see you soon!!! x”
Perhaps that's a mea culpa to you, but not to me. He has neither admitted that he, whether inadvertently or not (although given the way he's reacted, it doesn't seem inadvertent to me) plagiarized, nor has he actually apologized. What he's done is try to dance around the issue. While I understand why he may be taking that approach (trying to "spin" this "oops" into something acceptable), the only thing he's displayed is his total lack of character.
Personally, I found his voice to be completely annoying. Did any of the coaches? (they're not judges on the Voice, are they?) ever hit a button? The woman "coach" who was so excited about his performance, consistently said "I like it." Not him, but it -- she was reacting to the arrangement.
This guy has put the BBC version of The Voice in an awkward position. Is it likely that he will proceed?

He did get a chair turn by Rita at the end according to YT comments. I don't expect anything from The Voice.
Here's his most recent comment on his video on YT (where comments have a clear negative tilt).

I don't know what you mean by "I don't expect anything from The Voice." I'll assume that "Rita" was the coach who enjoyed the performance -- but, again, given what I can lip read that she said ("I like it) -- she liked the groove (ultimately the arrangement). Perhaps, in addition she liked dear Mitch's bad voice, but if so, that is only reflective of her inability to recognize a decent voice. What does this tell us?
The major thing is that Mitch doesn't seem to recognize that saying "oops, I made a mistake" might help him. As a result, I don't feel remotely sorry for what might -- and should -- happen to him.

To give credit to PMJ, for example. Just business as usual.
Mitch seems to think the issue is whether or not he likes PMJ.

I know it's not exactly the same thing but I remember an interview(which I couldn't find) with Frank Sinatra basically saying that Harry Connick junior had no style of his own (at least on the movie soundtrack of Harry met Sally (harry was billy crystal, a character with no connection to HCJ)
In my opinion Frank was right and Harry Conics style is entirely immatative of Frank Sinatra's delivery and the arrangements were uncannily the same.
The big difference in this case though is that the arrangment being copied was not the original version of the song but a remake of the song.
But, we know that original versions of songs are copied almost routinely on these shows ("you sounded just like the orginal artist, not yourself")
I see no really issue with copying the delivery of another artist or covering another artists work in a nearly identical way because, well it's done all the time. In fact, with classical music it is expected, almost required that you stay as close as possible to the composers intentions.
The issue here is purely one of giving credit on the air, and to be fair they never ever give credit to the writers or composers of songs on these shows, only mentioning the artist who had it on their albums or most recently made the song popular.
Really, it sort of rankles me sometimes when they call a song the singers song rather than the writers song. Back in the frank sinatra day's they'd often say, things like singing "Cole Porter's " xzy, or Rogers and Hammersteins "xyz".
yeah, a nod to PMJ is the gracious thing to do, but such omissions are the accepted norm these days really.
