I understand you have your opinions on how music should be, I think I'd just stress that there are different ways and styles to perform music. I think there's a fine line between technically incorrect and artistic creativity. Personally, for me..when things are debatable..it falls under artistic decisions (enunciation "Issues" for example...musical styles suggest different ideas...verses..pitch..either you are singing on pitch or you aren't..)

And that being said, obviously you are allowed to wish Haley would do something differently, we all have our opinions. I think all I'm saying is that Haley's way, in this instance, isn't necessarily incorrect.

The piano/guitar thing was always interesting to me. I never actually took the nails thing seriously, and I thought she took a class in jazz piano (which would mean, at the very least, she should be able to accompany herself with basic chords..) Maybe she just prefers to sing without playing an instrument? I'd like to see her play her own instruments every once in a while. i think that would be good musical growth for her.

mercfan, you seem to be a "mediator" at heart. Good for you! I hope that's the path you are pursuing professionally. While we've told that Haley "took a class in jazz piano," as you & I know, one can sign up for a class, but withdraw. Perhaps Haley prefers to sing without playing, but my point has long been that I do want to see that musical growth in her -- but doubt that I ever will.

I don't think playing an instrument is the only form of musical growth. And I don't think it's necessary for a singer to do so. (No one, for example, expects a great guitarist to be a pianist.)

I think she can grow musically in other ways if she doesn't want to perform with an instrument. I'd say performance style is a big one (that I've seen growth for her there, but she could improve more.) I think through her sound she can improve. She's in her early twenties, I expect her sound to mature. I think her lyrics can improve/mature. She co-wrote a lot of great pop songs, but there are currently some great new song writers (Ed Sheeran/Mary Lambert/Hozier)..and her lyrics just don't match up. I'd imagine she wants to write more like Ed than Meghan Trainer. Some of that will come from maturity and life experiences, I think..and also just the practice of writing music.

Miguel, true, she was kept busy for a period of time, but there were also major periods of drought. She was largely dependent on the venue she performed at being willing to pay for her back up group. Had she been able to accompany herself (and think about this, in the family she grew up in, why couldn't she?? ), I believe she would have been able to perform more.

I am acutely aware of the "protectiveness" that Haliens surround Haley. I'm also acutely aware of the dysfunction that her fans operate under. I don't have to succumb to that.

I'm glad Haley doesn't try to play guitar or piano while singing. I've seen her pick up a tambourine or some other type of shaker, and it always takes away a tiny bit (IMO of course) from her finely tuned emotional vocals - she seems to lose a bit of focus. She is a vocalist, first and foremost, with a special once in a lifetime gift. I adore all of the weird little things she does, strange pronunciations, all of it, it adds to her as a unique artist. I see people fixate on those things, usually it's musicians who want her performance to be technically perfect, in their own opinion.

Anything "technically musical" is difficult for me since I have no ability to singing or play a instrument. Haley has guts, grit, talent and music is her love - that's why she does it and that's why I enjoy her. She is really quite good and there are literally thousands of her out there trying to make a living at it. She is pretty shrewd for someone in their 20's if you ask me.
