RE: Haley joining PMJ for part of European tour - Tusk - 02-23-2015 ![]() Quote: morgan james retweeted RE: Haley joining PMJ for part of European tour - My Alter Ego - 02-23-2015 (02-23-2015, 03:39 PM)john Wrote:(02-23-2015, 03:07 PM)Tusk Wrote: I expect there's a good chance PMJ will get a call out from the Voice, maybe on their next episode I'm interested to see how this issue gets resolved. Over the weekend as I was pondering what might have happened (i.e. that the contestant simply didn't say anything; that he did but The Voice announcers didn't mention it; that they did announce it but it was cut, the most plausible possibilities to me), I've been wondering how they'll address it. It's interesting to me that we've heard no real mea culpa from either the contestant or The Voice brand. No wonder Scott is disappointed. He, however, has been handling the "delicate situation" with aplomb. He should get decent publicity from it! Good grief. RE: Haley joining PMJ for part of European tour - Tusk - 02-23-2015 There was a 'mea culpa' from the performer in John's link http://tellymix.co.uk/reality-tv/the-voice/213476-the-voice-uk-accused-of-stealing-iggy-azalea-fancy-cover.html Quote:“I was just honoured to be able to sing such a great version! He has neither admitted that he, whether inadvertently or not (although given the way he's reacted, it doesn't seem inadvertent to me) plagiarized, nor has he actually apologized. What he's done is try to dance around the issue. While I understand why he may be taking that approach (trying to "spin" this "oops" into something acceptable), the only thing he's displayed is his total lack of character. Personally, I found his voice to be completely annoying. Did any of the coaches? (they're not judges on the Voice, are they?) ever hit a button? The woman "coach" who was so excited about his performance, consistently said "I like it." Not him, but it -- she was reacting to the arrangement. This guy has put the BBC version of The Voice in an awkward position. Is it likely that he will proceed? Is it likely that he will proceed? He did get a chair turn by Rita at the end according to YT comments. I don't expect anything from The Voice. Here's his most recent comment on his video on YT (where comments have a clear negative tilt). Is it likely that he will proceed? I don't know what you mean by "I don't expect anything from The Voice." I'll assume that "Rita" was the coach who enjoyed the performance -- but, again, given what I can lip read that she said ("I like it) -- she liked the groove (ultimately the arrangement). Perhaps, in addition she liked dear Mitch's bad voice, but if so, that is only reflective of her inability to recognize a decent voice. What does this tell us? The major thing is that Mitch doesn't seem to recognize that saying "oops, I made a mistake" might help him. As a result, I don't feel remotely sorry for what might -- and should -- happen to him. Just business as usual. Mitch seems to think the issue is whether or not he likes PMJ. I know it's not exactly the same thing but I remember an interview(which I couldn't find) with Frank Sinatra basically saying that Harry Connick junior had no style of his own (at least on the movie soundtrack of Harry met Sally (harry was billy crystal, a character with no connection to HCJ) In my opinion Frank was right and Harry Conics style is entirely immatative of Frank Sinatra's delivery and the arrangements were uncannily the same. The big difference in this case though is that the arrangment being copied was not the original version of the song but a remake of the song. But, we know that original versions of songs are copied almost routinely on these shows ("you sounded just like the orginal artist, not yourself") I see no really issue with copying the delivery of another artist or covering another artists work in a nearly identical way because, well it's done all the time. In fact, with classical music it is expected, almost required that you stay as close as possible to the composers intentions. The issue here is purely one of giving credit on the air, and to be fair they never ever give credit to the writers or composers of songs on these shows, only mentioning the artist who had it on their albums or most recently made the song popular. Really, it sort of rankles me sometimes when they call a song the singers song rather than the writers song. Back in the frank sinatra day's they'd often say, things like singing "Cole Porter's " xzy, or Rogers and Hammersteins "xyz". yeah, a nod to PMJ is the gracious thing to do, but such omissions are the accepted norm these days really. RE: Haley joining PMJ for part of European tour - john - 02-24-2015 ^ Yeah, it does seem to the norm. At least the writers have rights to royalties when their songs are used. But a style or arrangement only gets credit if it is name-drop worthy. I think a show like The Voice should want to maintain a good reputation with the "little guys" of the music world, since that is where that try to recruit. It is just courtesy and class. It seems that social media makes this all the more important since it opens up communication among fans and performers like never before. A brand like The Voice can find itself damaged by these kinds of storms. They posted the Fancy video from the show, but the comments aren't friendly for the most part. Mr. MIller finds himself doing damage control (poorly) rather than enjoying his acceptance on to the show. If the Voice is bothered by the negativity they will probably just get rid of him quickly rather than score a small PR win by mentioning PMJ. They could easily slip that in without having to apologize about it. |
