RE: Keith Phelps interview
It's not easy in the Business they call Music. Even harder still to keep an upbeat disposition as Haley has done despite set backs. Equally upbeat is her keyboardist, Keith Phelps...but even he has his limits.
In a twitter conversation with FM, Keith blows off some steam of frustration about the business side of the 'process' and shares his exasperation about the business

I haven't gotten one single record placement and I could still teach a workshop on how to get one...now wat does that tell u?
Quote:Keith Phelps@KEiTHPHELPS
@BizzerkAlmasy I refuse to lay down for these record plantations
Quote:Keith Phelps@KEiTHPHELPS
@BizzerkAlmasy the game isn't about talent. It's about who's willing bend over and take the most industry meat
Quote:Keith Phelps@KEiTHPHELPS
@KenOstroff jazz is the same way dude...i had alot of similar experiences with my band...same douches, different genre man
Quote:Keith Phelps@KEiTHPHELPS
@KenOstroff many my band has sold out clubs where they've ran out of food and liquor. They STILL won't call us back. It's all politics man
Quote:Keith Phelps@KEiTHPHELPS
@KenOstroff i gotta write a book called "Lets Be Real: The Truth About the Music Industry"
Quote:Keith Phelps@KEiTHPHELPS
@KenOstroff its the same situation for getting gigs, unless u wanna play open mic nites & smoky bars...theyll book just about any1 for no $
Quote:Keith Phelps@KEiTHPHELPS
@KenOstroff its one of those things where i been there and done that...the middle is a hard position to be in my friend lol hard to explain
Very uncharacteristic of the usually hopeful and upbeat Keith. Hopefully he won't mind I posted this, but I wanted to show how remarkable Haley has been able to be positive about this whole process. It even got to the always positive Keith.
My hope is Keith will finally break through to do what he wants to do with his career. I'm always impressed at how positive and well Keith carries himself and I understand that he has times of exasperation...makes him human.
If you read this...Keith keep the faith. You are very talented and you do have people that are pulling for you. Sometimes it just takes the right timing:
Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity
you and your talent have the preparation, just waiting for the opportunity to come .....

RE: Keith Phelps interview
Tusk and John, many thanks for both the interview and the vid (one of them) from the DC gig. Being as much of a lip reader as I am, the lag time between audio and visual was distracting to me (interview), but the interview was enjoyable, nonetheless. Makes me have more respect for Keith, and I didn't think that would be possible. (And nod should be made in the direction of the young man who did the interviewing; he did a nice job.)
That Keith can be "caught off guard" (as alluded to in the D.C. show) and recover as well as he did, speaks to just how good he is. Did you notice the smiles on Courtney's face -- I haven't noticed that he smiles much. Haley knew she could do that to Keith, because she gets how good he is and knows he'll whip out something worth listening to. I can't wait to hear the results of Haley and Keith in the studio -- truly can't wait! I know that I ached for Neara when that abrupt change took place, but, in retrospect, I can't say it wasn't a good change.
And Keith, if you are lurking/reading:
Heed Tusk's advice!!!
And know that there are people who recognize and appreciate your talents!

His most memorable performance was the DC show, where none of the prerecorded music was used. I like that Haley has been playing around with stripped down arrangements. She is progressively looking more comfortable with her material and her musicians, as well as in her interactions with the audience. She is becoming a more seasoned artist, which will serve her well when when one of her songs catches fire.
He mentioned that Haley took took some different liberties that caught him off guard including calling him for a solo during the DC gig. He smiles recalling that event and obviously treasures the attention that Haley threw his way. Featured here:
Keith's story about getting hired by Haley right before the AI appearance indicates that Haley was willing to take a big risk by using a new guy who had not performed with her and had limited experience in general. That says something -- maybe a few things.
That was awesome ! I love that kind of music and.. well they gotta keep doing it to get better ... it is an art in itself . Just hours and hours night after night and .... it might not be something that people on the radio will every appreciate .. nor much of the auediences just there to get drunk..but the band together is feeling it the better they get, and that's somethin in itself.
ok, i won't write an essay right now .. lol
started three times. but i'll keep it to myself ... too many personal memories
