Do they sometimes just record("produce?") songs with artists they think can make a good product and go out and sell pitch the completed songs? I know it is a feast or famine business and if you aren't getting paid and have an empty studio and free days, I can see that kind of guy putting his effort to good use and trying to sell it later? I went out tonight and had a fun time seeing Harry and Peter project with Harry Reinhart. People were dancing and singing along to the songs even though it's in a restaurant. 
I got a chance to talk with Harry a little about Haley recording new songs. Now i know nothing about the music business, but Tom, you were right. I asked him who was paying for recording the songs if Haley isn't signed with a label. Harry said the writers and producers will do it for free hoping that their song will get used on an album and played on the radio etc. That they would get their money back down the road if their song is successful. He said Haley "just needs one song" to break through!!
Harry also talked about how Haley is making some money from "residuals". I wasnt sure if this was from TV stuff or her songs playing in stores....
He said he has never heard his daughter's music played in stores. We were talking about how its playing over seas, in Europe, Korea etc.
He also asked if we saw the AI episode last night with the contestant mentioning Haley's name and thought that was very cool!!  What a proud pappa!

They play Neil Young, Simon and Garfunkel, The Cunninghams, Steve Winwood, Johnny Cash etc
They play in a restaurant, so its starts out with everyone eating, but pretty much the whole restaurant stayed to hear them play till 9:30 when they stop.
