Next album will be blusier

I hope she does go on tour vs. a continuation of single appearances as I agree with those who think it will help her continue to grow and refine her sound. She makes the most of her opportunities now, but I can't imagine how much touring would impact her. I know she has mentioned wanting to tour, and hopefully after the EP is released Haley and her team will make it happen.

American Idol singer Haley Reinhart to put out new EP

American Idol alumna Haley Reinhart may have been dropped by her record label Interscope, but the soulful songbird is certainly not letting the bad news get to her.

Reinhart, 22, who finished in third place in season 10 of hit reality television series American Idol, says she already has begun writing songs for a new EP to follow-up her debut album, Listen Up! (2012).

The singer, who was in town to promote the 12th season of Idol, which is currently airing on cable TV here, told Life! last Friday of her new material: "I think there will be elements that will be different about the music as a whole (compared to Listen Up!), but it will still have soulfulness to it."

She said there is no release date for the EP as yet, but it is something she is working to put out as soon as possible.

Haley always sings with such soulfulness, that's one of the many qualities that makes her stand out, and one of the things I admire the most about her music. I can't wait to hear the new CD!

Tbh, I still buy CDs & DVDs too. The reason I mentioned they probably won't bother w/ distributing EPs in stores, isn't because I think they're obsolete. There are still a lot of people that prefer owning a physical copy, but more so w/ an album than an EP. It's just that generally the purpose of an EP is to gain kind of a foothold for a possible album without a lot of costs up front. Plus Haley might even release her EP before she signs w/ a label. It could go down a lot of different ways.

So Haley provided quite a bit of new info on her plans for the next release with those interviews in Singapore.

First, I credit her so much with taking the high road over and over with Interscope and just being gracious and thankful for the opportunity. She acknowledges things didn’t work out, but she has moved on. The same with American Idol--obviously Fox still wants to use her to promote Idol around the world and she is always patient and playful when interviewers discuss her time with Idol.

Regarding her next EP release, I am glad to hear she is going in that bluesy, classic rock direction. I know that may disappoint her jazz fans, but she has plenty of time for a jazzy/Norah Jones style release. Another thing: the only really negative comments I have ever seen about “Listen Up” is that some people wanted the rocker/growler Haley they came to love on Idol and so the CD was not what they had hoped for. She may be more “in her lane” with a rockin/bluesy CD and we know she can belt out rock songs like very few female vocalists ever (IMHO).

Also, thought it was interesting what she said about finding a new label. She is right. You don’t need a label to release music or push out videos. A label’s biggest advantage is that they can release singles into the radio market. But as she has seen, even with her credentials and talent, it is hard to break through on Hot or Top 40 radio. And, after the Interscope experience, maybe she is thinking long term and building a catalog and hopefully getting on the road with a band and doing a real tour. Meanwhile, if one of her songs breaks through and becomes a hit, that would be great. (See Lumineers, Mumford and Sons) But, if she wants a long career, she is going to need to play it like a new artist. Release the music, and get on the road to support it and win more fans.

I was thinking about that when I read this about sixth place finisher Elise Testone from Idol Season 11, who many compared to Haley. As far as I can tell, she is unsigned to a record label but working on a new CD, but here is what she is doing now per her hometown Charleston City Paper:

“…. she’s put together a band of exceptionally talented, committed musicians and together they’re creating the kind of sound that she dreamed about. She’s got two back-up singers, both of whom she sang with while in college at Coastal Carolina University; a cellist; two saxophonists, one of whom also plays the trumpet and the other the flute; and bass, drums, guitar, and piano. Currently, she’s working with a manager to book a summer tour.”

Wow---a nine piece band. What could Haley do with something like that……? Well, here is hoping that we all read a similar story about Haley and a new band soon……… Hoping, hoping, hoping.

I have no problem with Haley focusing on other genres for her next EP/album that are not pure jazz. I love her voice and what Haley does is to incorporate different styles into her music regardless of her main direction, jazz being a major influence. I hear Haley’s signature jazz phrasing in her songs no matter the category and for me no other artist does this. Haley has even changed up her song arrangements to make them jazzier when she wanted to. As the expression goes “You can take the girl out of jazz but you can’t take jazz out of the girl.”

Besides, Haley can sing any genre fabulously including country.
