RE: Phillip Phillips
Having a hit single is a big help to a career. Phillip is getting more exposure on prime-time TV singing Home on the "A Home for the Holidays". No elaborate stage set or dancers. Just him with guitar in front of a microphone. Well done. There have been many well known singers on TV this past week and some didn't sound near as good as him.

RE: Phillip Phillips
I think Home's a good song but even I'm surprised at what monster it's become:
#1 hit on AAA, that is a first for an Idol, AAA is a super snobby format
Best selling Idol coronation single ever (almost 3 million)
Crossover in 6 formats: AC, HAC, CHR, AAA, Alt. Rock & Smooth Jazz
Apparently Gone Gone Gone is his next single and it's quite similar to Home so that will probably also be a hit.
Marketability smarketabibity, a hit song can make ANYONE marketable, just ask PSY. In the end it's the songs that matter, they must current, catchy and resonate with people.
