Haley and Casey - CityWalkLA - August 10th

My age driven somewhat effete minds eye is visualizing the chorus of "My Cake" blasting during touchdown time on ESPN Saturday college football this fall, hope OLE is as crazy as I am. Thanks everyone for all the posts, see you at the Cosmo.

First of all thanks to Tusk and all the Haliens for the videos and pictures from the CItyWalk concert event. Haley sounded great, looked gorgeous and her smiling, radiant attitude was stunning. A few observations:

• I really liked her song “My Cake” or whatever it is called. A great bluesy fun song that I think points to her new direction—more bluesy rock. I don’t think it is a single, but it will be a great addition to her new CD.
• Her first live performance of “What You Don’t Know” was the highlight for me. This song fits her so well, the swelling chorus line, the beat, the lyrics—right in her wheelhouse. I think this should become a standard for her in concerts going forward.
• I agree with folks that have talked about her accompanying musicians, the sound, etc maybe not being in sync, but Haley made it work, of course, with her amazing voice and charm. But that leads me to my last point.

I was always of the opinion that Haley should really work to separate herself from Idol and all of its accompanying baggage, and I always include Casey in that picture. However, I think Haley should consider Casey as part of her next evolution. It is clear that he understands her so well musically and they work wonderfully together. He also has done the hard work of putting together a band and done a lot of touring on his own since Idol. He IS the guy traveling in the van from gig to gig. Although I am a bit turned off by his over the top bohemian nature, he is a truly talented musician—no doubt. And, as noted, he is good friends with Haley’s family and (I think) just adores her.

I think Haley should consider in the next year or so connecting with Casey, especially if she gets signed and hopefully the label wants her to go on tour. The frustrating thing to me with Haley is that she is not getting together a consistent band to back her up. If she connects with Casey, that band is there—Casey has built it and worked it and they are experienced on the road. Add Haley to the mix, and I am sure the crowds would increase and the venues would become bigger. Especially if Haley hits it out of the park with her new CD, which I am sure she will. As noted, they could tour together with Casey opening up with some instrumental jams, etc, then have Haley come out for a set, in which he joins her, and he comes out for his set, and she joins him. They are kind of magical together and they just seem to have such chemistry.

I have no idea what is next for Haley, but if she does get signed, releases a CD and wants to tour (and I think she needs to tour on a regular basis with a consistent band to get to higher levels), then I think she should look to her friend Casey. It would be a win win for both of them. And a great show for their combined fan base. Sorry for the long post…. My .02….

I was a big Keith fan to start off because I though he was really much better than the girl. However, I've been losing faith in him because I don't think he's got a good feel at all for blues (like BB king R&B and before blues.. not Marvin Gaye/Lionel Ritchie style) and certainly not a true Rock (like roling stones/led zepplin, ) sound that her Dad Harry can lay out on guitar... some of Haley's songs on her album go more that direction and they go largely un-played I be because of that.

Hi. You don't know me, but I want you to know that this is inherently false. As they've already told you, this isn't Keith and Courtney playing with her. Do you honestly think Keith would struggle with Bennie and the Jets the way Lance did? Haley actually saw me laughing when she turned and half chuckled because trying to get him to slow down caused her to get thrown off the lyrics slightly and botch them. Keith can play anything. I've seen it. I know well what he can do as we've talked extensively about it. I could see Haley missed him on keys at this show and I told him that.

I did let the band comments rest after that long post but:

That is embarrassing for me.. both that I didn't quite understand a comment I got following and that I even could have dreamed that it was him.

My eyes aren't that good, but I was wondering how he had suddenly got filled out weight wise .... in the camera shots I saw of him.

re batj You're right .. I was perplexed... more or less "why doesn't he sound great like he did before on the numbers I know he does really well" ?

Tom, its not Courtney and not Keith. These guys haven't played together. So, I gotta give them a lot of slack, but they needed another rehearsal. The other band with the snapping fingers play together all the time.

I read this wrong.. didn't quite get it the real point. I thought I had inadvertently used one name for the other (I get my kids names wrong all the time.. calling my son my younger brother's name etc.. especially if my son is acting like my little brother did 30 years before)

Somehow how it didn't get through my mind that "Keith wasn't there"

A bigger point you make and which I almost did respond to was the comparison to the band that played together all the time.

Yeah.. that's my point.. a band that plays together all the time is going to sound better. (and in turn Haley is free to rise even higher, fueled by that musical energy)

"borrowing"(hiring them as a group on a gig basis?) another band that does play together all the time might be a good option for Haley focusing on writing opportunities and international things where it isn't feasible financially or by invite number to bring her own group with her.

RMD ...< thoughts on future possiblities with Casey > ....

Good ideas RMD .. they can still be separate artists and do gigs together.. and not necessarily one opening for the other .. if it was going on a tour opening for a bigger name the billing might be more like "opening sets from -both- Casey Abrahmns and from Haley Reinhart -... i.e. doesn't need to be a merged "casey&haley" thing.

Welcome to HF, Juanita, glad to have been together @ another great Haley show (the other was @ Haley's album debut @ the Hard Rock in LA as my 'girlfriend' ) I look forward to your insight.

Secondly re: Keith.

Echoes of Keith's performance at the LA private party still ring in my mind, it was sublime. I still ache that there is not a recording of it. His performance on the Baby Grand, on "Undone" especially, was a beautiful complement to Haley's vocalizations, transitioning with an ease that comes when two artists 'know' each other as well as they seem to.

Outside of Harry and fam, and Casey, Haley is very at ease performing with Keith. We've seen it time and again how they play off each other, Haley, 'throwing it' to Keith as easily as she does to Casey.

I hope that their musical relationship is a long, fruitful and a satisfying one. I am fully confident of Keith as an artist and his dedication to his craft no matter the genre he choses.

I am so excited to hear this particular pairing in a few days in Vegas....

Thanks everyone for your great videos and pictures!!! Took me over 2 hours just to catch up on all the videos and "buzz "posted here! hehe

Love that funky, jazzy Haley in "My Cake"! Could listen to that and watch Haley dance and scat all night.

Just wanted to say, I had family time while in Glendale, my Sis and her family drove up from San Diego to meet my Cousin in Glendale(French relative just moved from Seattle to Cali).

I showed my 15 yr old niece the picture book of Haley Greg gave to me.
(My Niece is musically inclined, her school band has been invited to perform @ Carnegie Hall next winter which I might go to )...

Anyway, she thumbed through it, and said of Haley,

The voice and the hair are a killer combination. Once Haley becomes better known and is frequently seen and heard on TV she will quickly be recognized nearly everywhere.
