Keith Urban is very personable and I was impressed how good of a guitar player he was. That sort of talent than comes in addition to his singing probably allows him to hear thing others might not -actively- hear (but do passively notice in ways that keep them listening to one recording over another years later for reasons they cannot express or point out)

The same is true about Harry Connick , yet I've yet to see if he knows popular music. Did he even like Janis Joplin ? Does he like Led Zepplin or Usher or Beyonce ? I'd hope he'd appreciate a broad variety of music beyond the old standards. He is a pretty funny guy who is accustomed to talking live to audiences every night which is bound to make it easier to listen to him talk than those without that honed talent.

JLO is smart.. I can tell , and she was up to some verbal repartee if she had a counterpart that didn't say really odd things that didn't make enough sense to have a comeback to. I do think she is inclined to be "either he's with me or against me" type of person that might not give people who get in the way of her favorites a fair shake. She is a dancer and is a musician to the extent that she influences the mixes and songs in ways that make them dance hits.. that is a form of artistry.. that doesn't make her a singer..but does maker her a musical entertainer that has an active hand in the product people(other people besides me) enjoy listening to.

I bet she would do well with the panel... there might even be "discussion" of performances rather than Critiques to the singer. I'd love to hear them talk outloud about what they were impressed about than trying to say "you did good", "you did ok" etc.

OK. This is a sad day. Without LDH around, I've kept my SYTYCD interest to myself this summer and since this is the next to the last week, it seems silly to start a new thread.

But, OMG, Nigel?? There's much not to respect, but this???

Nigel, unfortunately, quoted Randy Jackson in describing one of the two female finalists. He said Jasmine is (ugh...) "in it, to win it." Et tu, Nigel?

I think JLo hurts the women in the competition.

Now, by no means is she the only judge that critiques women more so than men, but she's the only female judge to do so. (Granted, Mariah talked about herself, and Paula liked everyone. And viewers didn't like Kara or Nicki.)

This is probably not news to you, but I think that J-Lo is jealous of the female contestants who can actually sing and are pretty/beautiful -- in other words, any young woman who might be a threat. If called out on it, she would either deny it or provide some feeble excuse such as: "oh, I think of them as my little sisters, and I want to push them to be the very best they can be." Yeah -- right! Whether consciously or sub consciously, what she's engaged in is undermining their confidence; implanting doubt, so that, ultimately her male favorites will do better. She's unconscionable, and AI bringing her back has aided her ability to do that.

MAE, although I usually agree with you I don't agree that Jlo is jealous of the female contestants. I think she is insecure. After all, she is old enough to be their mother. She is having a difficult time right now because she is on the precipice of being yesterday's news.

Perhaps sitting between two level headed males will bring out the best in her judging abilities. However, I feel that her decision to return to AI is strictly for self promotion. She is at a time in her life where she needs to reevaluate her priorities.

Just my two cents on the subject...

...Ms. Lopez had previously judged the show in seasons 10 and 11, where she was more likely to tell contestants “I can’t judge it. It was perfect” (as she said to season 11’s Hollie Cavanagh after a performance of “Rolling in the Deep”) than she was to offer constructive comments. During the final four performance episode in season 10, she questioned Haley Reinhart’s choice of Michael’s Jackson’s “Earth Song,” then said “This is why we can’t take it easy on you. Look what you’re capable of…” when the eventual third-place finisher performed “I Who Have Nothing” later in the show....

Mariah Carey "Hated" American Idol: It Was Like "Going to Work Every Day in Hell With Satan"

We're weeks away from Season 13 of American Idol and the return of judge Jennifer Lopez, but it doesn't look like Mariah Carey will ever follow suit and come back to the panel. She full-on blasts the show in a new interview with Hot 97's Angie Martinez. And she might even be comparing Nicki Minaj to the devil!

"Honestly, I hated it," Mariah explains. "Here's what it was … I was the first person signed on … Heaven forbid people [think] I'm saying something negative … I thought it was going to be a three-person panel. They gave me a nice, dangling monetary moment, and I was just like, 'OK, Randy Jackson will be there. I've known him forever. He used to play bass for me. Like, this isn't a big deal. This will be nothing.'"

If you think there's a big Nicki Minaj-sized "but" coming, you'd be right.

"But it wasn't that. It was like hell, going to work every day in hell with Satan," she recounts, laughing. "Nah, I'm just playing. It didn't affect me that much … I was just disappointed."

And then she starts raging against the Idol machine while sticking up for the competitors.

"You know what I loved? I loved the contestants. It was disappointing when they would, for political reasons, not put people through. I'm like, 'I don't have to sit here and do this. I would prefer to just put this person in the studio and record a record with them or tell another producer [to produce them] … But you know, that's the way it is on that kind of TV thing. I like being in the studio better and doing my own tours, et cetera. So we're going back to that."

Yeah, heaven forbid people think she's being negative!

I really wish Mariah hadn't done Idol.

She's one of my favorite voices. (Still Is). And she's someone I grew up loving. But I absolutely hated her on that show.

I can't stand women who get competitive with other women. And that's exactly what Mariah did. She didn't want Nicki because Nicki was the newer, younger, hotter thing.

Not only that, but she managed to make each and every single comment about her.
