Irvin Mayfield extends new invite to Haley

I thought the inflammatory comment from the Chicago Reader had previously been posted. I probably thought better of posting it earlier. Since I've introduced it as a subject, I'll post it now.

Tonight’s concert features New Orleans dynamo and R&B great Allen Toussaint, Chicago favorite Kurt Elling, and, um, an American Idol also-ran from Wheeling named Haley Reinhart. Well, two out of three ain’t bad, especially when the NOJO itself—which includes saxophonist and former Chicagoan Ed Petersen, clarinetist Evan Christopher, and drummer Adonis Rose—is so strong.

I was hoping to see a review the next day,
but they apparently didn't attend the show.

Their loss.

It's a great picture. I always like the side-by-side shots of Haley and Patti where you can see the resemblance to one another.

Maybe that was intentional because the preview of the event by the Chicago Reader discounted her Jazz chops due to her Idol ties. The timing is right for Chapter 2 though. She is nearly three years removed from Idol. If Haley has a big hit that puts her on the map, her abilities will be what's noticed and her Idol ties will be an afterthought.

What no Jazz chops? Ok Chi town reader I sure hope you listened to her a singing IF so retract the statement Dude she is in the Jazz zone.

Before leaving the Midnight show, I thanked the Reinharts for an incredible few days. I joked again that I would really love Haley to play up in the NW so I can get in my car, drive to see the show, drive back and sleep in my own bed!! Not have to fly to see her

Harry laughed and said We will! when things start rolling the right way (our way?)

I said, It will

Ending my visit on a positive note
(as I gave Patti a final hug, she said, tell everybody that Midnight should be Haley's backing band, I told her, I think BGDays proved that, for sure )

That reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from School of Rock (the movie).

"Those who can't do, teach. And those who can't teach, teach gym."

In this case, it was a preview, not a review, based on the words "American Idol." He doesn't appear to be a wannabe singer. He's someone though who takes pride in eschewing mainstream music. In his own words:

I’m not a musician. My parents just always had records. Neither one was really a musician, but they’d have records and I’d always listen. I remember getting a little toy record player when I was five or six. I was getting really into Top 40 by third grade, and my dad would tell me to listen to actual albums!

The thing that really put it into overdrive was getting into punk rock. I got into it largely for superficial reasons—because it was a weird thing to do—but then I listened long enough that it stopped being a social marker for me. I started listening to jazz records—the kids didn’t think that was cool.

...Older jazz musicians will come to me and say, “Are you a musician? No? Well, how can you write about music then?” My response is, “If you’re not a musician, how can you listen to music?” I don’t analyze stuff musicologically for people. I don’t think people that read The Reader want that.
