...Scotty also opens up about why he almost quit American Idol while competing in the show's 10th season.

"You get on the show, and your life changes but you as a person don't have to change," the devout singer says, recalling the time he was assigned to sing the song "Everybody's Talkin'" from the X-rated film Midnight Cowboy. Pushing back against industry heavyweights Jimmy Iovine and Nigel Lythgoe, Scotty flat-out refused to play ball.

"I loved the song, but the background behind it made me a little iffy," he explains. "So I told them I didn't want to sing it. They said, 'You don't have a choice.' I slept on it, still didn't want to sing it, so I told them, 'Well, I'm not going to show up on stage this week.' So I kinda forced their hand a little bit."

Gary Giddins stated that the song "set the music world on its ear" and that it was "part of the funky, back to roots movement that Horace Silver, [Charles] Mingus, and Ray Charles helped, in different ways, to fan." Jon Hendricks later added lyrics, and the subsequent recording by Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross made the song even more popular.

He is considered one of the originators of vocalese, which adds lyrics to existing instrumental songs and replaces many instruments with vocalists (such as the big-band arrangements of Duke Ellington and Count Basie). Furthermore, he is considered one of the best practitioners of scat singing, which involves vocal jazz soloing. For his work as a lyricist, jazz critic and historian Leonard Feather called him the "Poet Laureate of Jazz", while Time dubbed him the "James Joyce of Jive". Miguel, I'll echo John -- it is a nice find.

I'm not surprised that Mr. --er -- Professor Hendricks, as I learned this morning, would love Haley and Casey's rendition. They nailed it -- as we've known for 5 years??? (Has it been that long?) I do hope that his comments got back to Haley and Casey.

Nice to see Professor Hendricks looking as dapper as always. This morning, as I was trying to find out some other info on him, I clicked on a link only to discover that he was a subject of a thesis from someone attending the University of Toledo. I haven't finished reading it. I'll relay anything that I think might be of interest to this site.

Haley was tagged in the post, so she was expected there, perhaps to sing. Mike Cottone also plays with Casey and PMJ ( I believe he was also in Haley's Better video)

I just realized in the video footage from Haley's performance of "Fallin'" on Idol that the clip they show of her audition is her singing "Fallin'" and not Oh! Darling. I knew she auditioned with Fallin' originally, but I never realized they played a clip of it because they only showed her second song on tv. I think it's a weird choice that they played a clip of her auditioning with a song that the audience never saw her singing... up to that point.
