RE: Bad power outage
I wouldn't qualify it as political as much as highlighting events that might affect humanity, and it's 'slow to be aware' attitude, regardless of its political affiliation.
And regarding people's 'cognitive' skills. That may be true on an individual level, but not as a species. We have the capacity for sublime thought, but in the end, as a species, we will always react according to our baser instincts...always.
It would take something close to a cataclysm before we have the 'group think' to do something about it, but probably, by then, it'll be too late.
My guess is that our only hope will be to outgrow our 'birthplace' and find habitation elsewhere. The only way we can do that is to take the next quantum leap in evolution. Our soft, fleshy bodies will have to develop into something that can withstand the rigors of space travel, not to mention the intellectual capacity to handle the distortions of chronological, linear time, that would be involved in space travel in 'light years'.
The hold up is, our ability to change our environment has held up our natural evolutionary path. We control one of the primary influences in evolution. Our environment. We can now live in practically any environment on Earth and stay, basically the same. So, we've technically slowed, if not stalled our physical evolution. On the other hand, our ability to control our environment may well prove handy when we will need to figure out how to terraform a planet so we can live on it. (That's what it'll take to colonize Mars)
So human 'evolution' has taken another path. I think we are at the very beginning of transitioning into entirely different beings through our accelerating understanding of technology. We can actually make organic 'machines' and 'tools' the size of tiny microorganisms, capable of entering the blood stream now. We are on the brink of creating computers that have incredible processing ability. Not at the same rate as our brain, but we are very close to mapping out neuron nets that might eventually lead to machines with simple thought mechanisms, which might lead to self awareness. In a way, the transition has begun with artificial organs and limbs in many. We can map our brains well enough to convert the electrical impulses in our brains to initiate movements in artificial hands and legs.....
If we ever achieve that, then it's not that big a step to transfer our human thoughts through electric impulses into the network matrixes. And if that is possible, then long distance travel through the rigors of space and time to find a new home, becomes possible.....
